Orion 203mm f/4.9 Reflector Telescope Optical Tube

A great value in moderately big optics.
For visual use this is a terrific scope
and excels right out of the box, optics
and focuser are good. However shortly
after getting this I decided to try it
for DSLR astrophotography and soon
learned the supplied Crayford type
focuser would need to be replaced. There
simply is not enough in-focus for
astrophotography with the supplied
standard focuser. I purchased the Orion
2 speed focuser which fit right on to
the tube using the existing holes with
no modifications. A simple if pricey
upgrade. Orion should consider making
the 2 speed focuser the standard focuser
for reflector tubes with 2" focusers.
For astrophotography with a crop frame
DSLR, like a Canon Rebel series camera
there is noticeable coma as you might
expect although it is not bad and is
easily cropped out on most shots. There
are coma correctors that can eliminate
most of this. The center is sharp and
due to the 8" F/4.9 optics exposure
times are short. With a full frame
camera the coma is more noticeable and
there is some vignetting (darkening in
the corners). Although again, it is
easily cropped out and not an issue for
most targets as the center of the photos
are clear and sharp.
Overall this is a very good tube for
visual and a good tube for
astrophotography if you understand its
limitations. Recommended.

Recently purchased the Orion 203mm
f/4.9 on an Atlas mount. I have had the
scope about 6 weeks now and love it.
This is my first "real" scope after a 30 yo
Tasco.
First, kudos to Orion for packaging.
When I received the boxes I was worried
due to crushed corners etc., but Orion
double boxes all important items, and
uses well fitting styrofoam and all pieces
were 100% intact. The fit and finish is
excellent. Assembly is a piece of cake,
the instructions with the mount and
scope are very clear. I was up and
running in an hour.
Secondary collimation was great out of
the box, the primary needed adjustment
but that's totally expected after shipment.
The GOTO is awesome and saves
significant time finding things, especially
in my light polluted skies where it is
VERY easy to miss faint fuzzies. I've so
far only done the two-star alignment and
as long as you get those stars centered,
the GOTO always puts the object I need
in the field of view. The supplied 25mm
eyepiece doesn't really give enough
magnification to do a great GOTO
alignment, I have since purchased an
8mm and a 2x barlow. Centering
alignment stars at 4mm makes the
GOTO very accurate.
Now the views - I live in a very light
polluted area (red zone) and I can still
make out some galaxies. M81 and M82
are visible, although faint. Open clusters
are simply beautiful, you can see all the
colors and different formations. Globular
clusters are visible but really just as a
faint blob (again, light pollution, not
really the scope). Viewing saturn with
the 8mm and 2x barlow is just plain
cool! You can easily see 5 moons, I
believe I found a few more with better
dark adaption and averted vision. The
scope clealry shows the 4 main stars of
the trapezium at 25 mm, and others are
visible in the 8mm depending on the LP.
Portions of M42 are visible even through
the LP.
I cannot wait to get this scope to a dark
sky.
My only complaint is that to reach focus
with a DSLR for prime focus, you must
use the screw on adaptor, which screws
the T-ring/DSLR to the focus tube,
otherwise there isn't enough inward
travel for focusing. This limits filter use
etc. This isn't a huge deal, but it wasn't
obvious to me before purchasing. I
would have probably still purchased, but
at least I would have known up front that
addition investment may be required
(i.e. low-profile focuser etc.).
All in all I am very happy with the scope
and would easily purchase again.

I ordered and received a 203mm OTA
the other day. I have purchased a
number of scopes from Orion over the
years and found them to be of very high
quality. I was disappointed in the fit and
operation of the Crayford focuser and
also expected a seamless tube rather
than having an exposed seam running
the length like the Orion dob tubes. The
scope is being returned and the Crayford
focuser review submitted in hopes of
correcting the fit and operation.

Unfortunately, the 203 mm reflector was
not satisfactory for imaging with my
Canon dslr. There was not enough
travel inward to focus. The bad thing I
was out $50 for shipping on the scope
and the accompanying rings. I
appreciate the courteous nature of the
Orion people. Someone else had
mentioned they couldn't focus with a dslr
and I should have listened.

I am very happy with my 8 inch F4.9 ota
from Orion. I ordered the ota to put on a
mount which I already possess. The
images through this scope are excellent,
with virtually no optical abberations you
tend to see in scopes of this f/ratio. The
fit and finish are top notch as well. I
would have been happy with this scope if
I had paid more than I did. It is a
keeper.

Until I had joined a Astronomy club and
saw what I was missing. The first thing I
thought, was ' I got to get a bigger
scope'. I could see some of the things,
the guys were showing me. But in my
4.5 OTA. It just wasn't as nice. But now
with the new 203mm, It is great to see
things as they do. I am very pleased
with this product, and with Orion
Telescopes, for prompt delivery, and
customer support. Good job! Thanks
again

Although I had reservations about
purchasing
such a telescope as this (the price was
rather
low for such a wonderful scope)--it
proved to be
one of my best purchases yet! The 8" is
EXTREMELY portable, and has the light
gathering
power one needs to see the dimmer
objects in
the sky. I've already done some
Astrophotography with it to test it out,
and the
test (on the Moon and on M51) came out
so well
that I'm sending in the photographs to
prove
just how good this telescope is.
Extremely
sharp, pinpoint images on stars, and the
Rings
of Saturn have resolution that one would
expect
from 10" telescopes or better. For my
money,
this has to have been one of the best
purchases
I've made from Orion!

WELL I JUST RECENTLY PURCHASED
THIS AWESOME SCOPE, UNTIL NOW THE
LARGEST SCOPE I HAVE EVER OWNED
OR EVEN LOOKED THROUGH WAS A 6"
REFLECTOR AND THE DIFFERENCE
WAS "WOW" THE VIEWS ARE NOTHING
SHORT OF "WOW". THE ONLY THING I
HAVE A GRIPE ABOUT (BUT ONLY A
LITTLE ONE) IS I HAD TO ORDER THE
EXTENSION SO I CAN USE MY CANON
DSLR FOR SHOOTING IMAGES. SO I
SAY, WAY TO GO ORION, GREAT
SCOPE. DID I MENTION THE VIEWS
ARE "WOW".

Just wanted to say this scope provided
me with some great views of the Orion
Nebula the Pleiades and The Moon.
Can't wait to take it out to see some
other deep sky objects.

I love the optics. Visually, the wide view
offers spectacular images with pinpoint
stars, especially with my Orion 2 inch
42mm eyepiece. WOW !
Photographically, I'm not quite so happy.
My Canon 30D will not reach focus when
racked all the way in. I will probably
need to purchase the two speed
Crayford focuser to fix the problem. Or
move one of the mirrors.
I'm also upset that the tube arrived with
one large 3" diameter dent in it and 2
smaller, about 1 inch dents. There was
also a large scratch in the tube.

I am new to this hobby and debated for
a long time before making my decision
to purchase the 203mm f/4.9. I know
now that I made a good decision. I have
had the telescope for about four weeks
now and have been amazed each night I
have been able to get out. The sky in my
area is very light polluted and I still have
been able to see well anything I pointed
to. Overall a great scope and buy. The
Atlas EQ-G Goto mount is a must have
for me since I am just learning. I was
blown away when I told it to go to Saturn
the first time I set it up and it did. Great
Product ORION. Delivery was on time
with no problems at all.

I bought this tube what a deal it came
with the stock focuser and the upgrade
as well. I put this tube on the
Celestron go-to mount that came with my
Celestron c-6 xlt. The two work great
together. The Orion tube is just the
right weight. Any more would be two
much. The views are great its great for
travel. I like it more then the c-6 xlt.
The orion mirror is cleaner and has no
fine scratches. With the Orion 8 inch
Newtonian the amplification abilities
are great. Get this tube it is such a deal.
