Orion 6in. f/5.0 Newtonian Imaging Reflector OTA
  • Step up to serious astrophotography with this high quality, heavy duty wide-field reflector
  • Compares head-to-head with many high-end imaging refractors but at a fraction of the price
  • Optimized to fully illuminate the image chip in Orion StarShoot CCD cameras and most digital SLRs
  • Beefy 2" Crayford-style focuser accepts 1.25" accessories and easily supports heavy cameras

If your astrophoto aspirations go beyond our 4.5" Imaging Reflector, step up to our Orion 6" Newtonian Imaging Telescope Optical Tube. Its performance compares head-to-head with many high-end refractors, but at a fraction of the price.

With its large 6" (150mm) parabolic mirror, this compact f/5 astrograph is optimized to fully illuminate the imaging chip of Orion StarShoot charge coupled device cameras and most digital SLRs, rendering exquisite detail even with short exposures. Added tube length in front of the secondary mirror blocks glare for improved contrast. Images are virtually coma free and, of course, there's no chromatic aberration.

The focuser is a low-profile, 2" Crayford-style design made of machined, anodized aluminum and it has coarse and fine (11:1) focus controls. It comes with a 1.25" compression ring adapter and a dovetail base for an Orion finder scope.

Put the Orion 6" Newtonian Imaging Telescope Optical Tube Imaging Reflector on any Orion mount and you'll have one awesome telescope for imaging! And when you want a break from that, just pop in an eyepiece for brow-raising visual adventures.

Available as optical tube assembly with no accessories. One-year limited warranty.

Orion 6in. f/5.0 Newtonian Imaging Reflector OTA

First impression. Scope is packaged well, and made the journey undamaged. Out of the box the scope appears well constructed, with it's biggest asset a buttery smooth focuser. After mounting the scope into the rings, which are are not the best but for the price they do the job, that I ordered with the scope, I placed the included collimating eyepiece into the focuser and noticed that the scope had been knocked out of collimation. Which was expected. So I adjusted the collimation according to the manual and awaited first light. First light. The included 2"-1.25" adapter that comes with the scope is it's first down fall, it is too tight to easily slide eyepieces in and out of, and will not clamp down to secure the eyepiece once inserted. Next I find that even with the focusers extension tube all the way out I cannot achieve focus with any of my eyepieces and have to slide the 2"- 1.25" adapter out about 1/2" to attain focus. Now that I have focus I see that the stars in the center are sharp but distort about 50% of the way out from center of the field of view. At this point I was beginning to get discouraged. But an astronomer friend comes over with his laser collimator and we see that the telescope is still out of collimation and proceed to collimate the scope. To start the secondary mirror is out of adjustment and he asks me for the allen wrenches that came with the scope. Well there isn't a wrench that fits the secondary adjustment screws in the kit... Luckily he has one and we get the secondary aligned, then we adjust the primary. With the scope collimated I take another peak threw the eyepiece... WOW! Stars are sharp to the edge. I spent the rest of the night viewing and was absolutely delighted with the optical performance of this scope. Final conclusion. Adding a 2" extension tube and an Orion Precision Centering Adapter did the trick for curing the focus and eyepiece problem. So inclued them with your order along with a laser collimator if you don't already have one. Lastley, besure to get an allen wrench that fits the secondary before you head out to the field. I now have an AWESOME scope an would highly recommend it with the additional accessories.

I am very pleased with the the 6" Imaging scope. Due to weather I have only had it out twice, but the sharp stars and ease of focusing are a real joy. Thank you Orion for a fine product at a good price.

I just got my 6" Imaging Newtonian 4 days ago. This scope is so awesome. The images i was getting both visual and with the StarShoot Pro were crisp, clear, and sharp! with the CCD i was getting MORE detail with less exposure times than using my 80mm ED. I first checked Collimation right out of the box...and it was spot on. just one turn of one of the primary mirror's adjustments screws was all it needed. I do need to point out an error in the manual. It says that you need to extend the drawtube extension tube for use with an eyepiece...this is true..however, if goes on to say to retract it when you use your CCD imager. well..when using both my SS-pro and SSDSCI-II i had to keep it extended to achieve proper focus. if the extension is not extended and you try to focus... you will not get anything. STILL... this scope is EASY 5 star. even the focuser is awesome and smooth to rack. Best imaging scope all around. Orion should make a 10" version...or start putting this focuser on all their newts.

This scope far exceeded my expectations. The focuser is what makes this little heavy so much fun. I use it with my 300D camera and it handles the weight without any problem what so ever. The focuser has a built in extension tube that actually works, I don't need an extension tube to achieve focus what a plus and totally unexpected. The proof is in the images though. http://www.sfaaa.com/gallery2/d/5602- 5/m31_home_101708_filteredbw.jpg http://www.sfaaa.com/gallery2/d/5603- 5/m13_1018083filteredcopy.jpg

This little reflector is big on performance. A tremendous bargain for the cost. The f/5 focal ratio brings down galactic images and other DSO's with excellent resolution. The optics are very sharp with little or no coma that I can see. I recommend this OTA to anyone involved in DSO imaging.

I have not been able to use the scope much due to either work or clouds. But I did play with it some. I feel that overall that it is a nice piece of equipment. However, I am disappointed with the focuser. About half way through the focus range there was a "catch" where it would not move. I have had good results with past purchases so I am sure that this problem is unique to the unit that I received. Otherwise I think that it is a good scope.

This is a great scope. 8" was too big for me to carry around, but this 6" was the perfect balance between excellent views and portability. A little coma is detectable at the edges but not too bad. The focuser is very nice - I highly recommend it. I paired it with a SkyViewPro mount for stability and I have never been happier. I can zoom in on Saturn or Mars at high powers and get a bright stable image. But with lower powered eyepieces I get a wide field of view also - best of both worlds! Note - if you're short you might need a step stool to reach the eyepiece at the zenith, if on an SVP mount. I'm 5'6" and there are a few positions I have trouble reaching. If you're 5'8" you shouldn't have a problem. And no, I don't extend the SVP legs. Don't have to. Which also adds to the stability.

I'm surprised there have not been any reviews on this little marvel. Subtle considerations for astrophotography make this a gem. Any hesitation I had in considering this for DSLR work was gone in an instant after my first most successful night of astrophotography in years. The results were stunning, wish I could reference a link to my blog with the pics. Key points: oversized secondary, excellent primary optics, no coma at all at prime focus, elongated tube for shielding secondary from glancing light, snug 1.25" adapter ensuring excellent alignment in concert with a laser collimator, and the low-profile dual focuser for fine focus (the most important bit). With all the hype about refractors, amazing how the simplicity and accuracy of a well-made Newtonian can be forgotten. This is way worth the price. Thank you, Orion. Can't express how truly pleased I am.
