Orion StarBlast 4.5 Equatorial Reflector Telescope
  • Stop shopping and start starhopping with this incredibly easy-to-use StarBlast EQ
  • Wide-field optics and a small price tag make this the telescope to buy
  • The easier it is to use, the more it will get used - and the StarBlast EQ sets the standard
  • Take this telescope on a starlit stroll and see the stars, the Moon and more
  • One-year limited warranty

Considering how many adults have told us they love our Orion StarBlast "mini" Dobsonian telescope we weren't surprised that some of them suggested we offer the StarBlast optical tube on a full-size telescope mount. Sounded like a good idea to us. So here it is, the Orion StarBlast 4.5 EQ.

It's bound to become a favorite of both beginners and experts alike. It combines the much-heralded StarBlast wide-field (f/4.0) parabolic optics with a sturdy, adjustable-height EQ-1 equatorial tracking mount.

The telescope's short focal length serves up a generous chunk of sky in the eyepiece, making it easy for beginners to find objects. This version of the StarBlast offers an even more pronounced wide-field viewing experience, as we've upgraded the telescope eyepieces to include two from the Expanse series — 15mm (30x) and 6mm (75x) — which have a 66° apparent field of view. Images of everything from the Moon to the Messier objects appear exceptionally sharp and contrasty. And the EZ Finder red-dot aiming finder scope makes starhopping around the sky a breeze.

With the equatorial telescope mount, you will be able to keep your target object centered in the eyepiece with only an occasional tweak of one slow-motion cable. Or, add an optional electronic drive and let it do the tracking automatically.

So, if you're an adult (or a parent with a family) looking for an exceptional beginner telescope on a tracking mount, or an experienced amateur astronomer seeking a more portable alternative to your "light bucket," then get an Orion StarBlast 4.5 EQ Telescope. The name says it all! One-year limited warranty.

I purchased this telescope one year ago and this is the best telescope ever! It is extremely portable, and easy to use the mount to navigate your way around the heavens. Also if you live in light polluted skies its no problem with this telescope. During the summer months i looked at M51 and surprisingly it was clear and bright.

The instructions were clear and helpful and made set up easy. The optics are clear, and even with a lot of urban light I get great views of craters on the moon. The starry night software is awesome - I'm even spotting satellites!

My sky viewing had been limited to eyeballing and using a pair of field binoculars. I never imagined a real telescope could be so affordable. The first clear night I amazed at craters and mountains on the Moon and Jupiter and its moons. The instructions could use some fine tuning but assembly and operation went quite smooth. I appreciated and took the advice of other reviewers and ordered the Barlow lens and moon filter.

As the title says, it is the best portable beginner scope that becomes a much more powerful tool when you enhance with eyepieces, filters and so on. I have it for more than a year taking a good care of it and it never show any sign of deterioration i've never been happier for somethig that i dreamed of even it's not a superscope, it got me closer to the sky like never before.

We just recieved our StarBlast 4.5 Equatorial Reflector Telescope here in Afghanistan today! The set up was pretty easy for us (first time telescope owners). We took it out side tonight and were very happy with it! We already have a group of interested soldiers! Thank you!

This telescope is improperly advertised as being for beginners. Period. Everything from assembly to operation is one full step ahead of a beginner's level. Do not buy if you are at such level.

What a deal this telescope is. Easy set up, and easy to use. It takes me to new and amazing sites every time I use it. Can't wait till my 2x Barlow lens shows up to really put this baby to work. Thanks Orion, you've made a believer out of me.

I picked up my StarBlast 4.5 a few weeks ago and I love it. I wanted to get started in the hobby and was attracted to the scope because of it's low price, but I was a little worried that the "low price' would translate to "poor performance". A local dealer had one on display and not too long after that I was loading it in the car. I went ahead and picked up the 2x "Shorty Plus" barlow as well to boost the power and lens options. The scope was well packed and it didn't take long for me to assemble my first scope. The guy at the store told me that it was a good time to look at Saturn. That same day ended with a clear evening making it the perfect time to pull out the scope for the first time. The scope performed great. It took just a few moments to get it set up and aligned. The EZ Finder scope that is included makes pointing the scope simple... My first target that evening was Saturn, and the view I got made me happy I invested in the barlow. I could clearly see the rings and moons with the 6mm eyepiece and 2x barlow. After that, I pointed the scope at Orion and got a great view of the Orion Nebula! Overall, I am very happy with this scope. It's the perfect choice for someone just getting into the hobby. What you get for the price makes this a super value...

This past Christmas, my boss came up to me knowing I'm into astronomy. (I own several scopes including the 8" IntelliScope from Orion along with a lot of other stuff from them too) He wanted a CHEEP scope for his wife for a present. lol. Well, I found this scope on here and recommended it to him and he bought it. It came on Christmas Eve. I assembled it for him and checked everything out while showing him how to use it. It was only slightly out of collimation and showing him how to fix it took less then 5 minutes and it was set. We're in Chicago and the skies were polluted and partly cloudy. I spotted Orion and gave a try on the nebula. OMG. It was awesome in the eyepiece. The tripod wasn't the most stable, but we both seen the best sites of it. It was then he took the scope from me and went home. I've seen a lot more in my bigger scopes, but seeing this scope in action, i decided to order it for myself. Aperture is everything....but what scope you will use the most is the most important thing in deciding a scope purchase. To be honest, the Expanse eyepieces put this so far over the top that nothing else can come close. Get a 2x Barlows and a polarizing filter for the moon and you'll spend so many nights looking in this thing that you'll never pull out your big scopes out again. Ok, not really, but your big scopes will be a lot dustier.

I purchased this scope mainly for the ease of use and portability. The views through this scope are great as you get a clear, wide angle view. Though Saturn is a little small not unexpected for a wide angle scope. Then I attached my Orion StarShoot Imager II and could not believe the shots I managed to get of Orion's Nebula, M42. What a winning combination and very pleased with both. Thanks again Orion, one happy customer. David Jennings

I did a lot of research on the type of telescope that I should buy for my 8 year old and I know that I've made the right choice. He has been so excited using his "Star Blast" to view the night sky we can't wait to be able to move up to the next level for him. It has been very easy for someone his age to use and we will definitely be purchasing from Orion in the future.

I like the versatility of the scope. I can get decent views of planets and DSOs with it. There is a bit of coma near the edge though. The focuser is ok, but it would have been better if it is made of metal. The only thing I don't like is the EQ-1 mount. It will have trouble rotating when you are near the equator (in my case 14 degrees N latitude) because the counterweight is always blocked by the legs. I also cannot point at the zenith when the tracking motor is installed.

I received this telescope on a Saturday afternoon just before my husband and I were leaving to the Summer Nights event at the Golden Pond Observatory in Kentucky, he put it together for me and when we arrived I aimed it at the M 31 (Andromeda Galaxy) and was so amazed that I could actually see the spiral details with this scope and how easy it was to track it!!!! It is a product I strongly recommend for those who want high quality but don't want to mess with a very big one due to weight, size and having a small car.

Awesome!! Awesome!! Awesome!! What a telescope. I am new to using a telescope of any kind and this is my first one. The directions for assembly were easy to follow and overall it is a great package. My first viewing was of the moon at dusk. I was blown away by the incredible detail that this telescope provides. I have already used it many hours, it is addictive. Where I live there is light pollution and with this telescope I am able to point it into the sky where nothing is shining and see hundreds of stars, etc. I recommend this telescope to any and all who want to view the wonders of space. It's the best way for a beginner like me to view the night sky like never before. Awesome!!!

The directions to assemble this were terrible and it took several hours to figure them out. The telescope works well for a beginner scope. It's powerful enough to see the rings on Saturn. I'm still not sure I'm using it correctly because the tube keeps pressing up against the R.A. and Dec handles while I'm trying to adjust it's aim and then I have to stop and reposition everything so the handles don't get bent or snap off.

Ever since I was 9 years old, I've loved astronomy. I received this remarkable telescope on Christmas last year and I have been amazed at what this simple and beautiful instrument can do. The telescope offers fantastic close- up views of the Moon, terrific views of the planets and great images of stars. I would recommend this telescope to anyone who loves to observe the night sky. It will inspire you to explore the world of astronomy. Orion, thank you for opening the world of astronomy to my family and me. I believe in the quality of your products.

As a beginner amateur I am fully satisfied with this little telescope. I had some bad experiences with telescopes from department stores which discouraged me to astronomy, but it is since I started using this scope observing the sky became a real pleasure. This is an excellent and affordable reflector for all who want to start their adventure with astronomy. The delivery was quick, and the product came well packed. Highly recommended

I just purchased this telescope for my daughter's 6th birthday. We couldn't be more pleased. A wonderful mix of ease-of-use and function. This will last us for years to come. Encouraging sciences in young girls is so important and an instrument like this is a wonderful start. Thank-you for a reasonably priced, well-constructed, scientific instrument for our home.

I found this scope to be very good for anyone who does want to be too overwhelmed by some of the other, more complicated scopes on the market. It was very easy to assemble, instructions were easy to follow, set-up was a breeze and in no time at all we had it in our backyard and enjoying the many wonders that the night sky has to offer. The Orion StarBlast has opened our eyes to what astronomy is really all about.

My general impression of the scope is good and it is very portable and easy to use. The mount is the weakest part of the offering, but you get what you pay for as always. I bought additional accessories. All equipment was purchased from the website. Packaging and shipping was excellent. Everything arrived as scheduled with no damage, well packed and complete. Specific observations: The focuser is very course and makes fine tuning the focus very difficult and touchy. Supplied eyepieces do the job, but the Barlow 2x is necessary to get the most out of the system. I have found that the LaserMate collimating aid I purchased is was shipped out of collimation and the eyepiece holder is out of square by about 10/1000 of an inch and the fit within the sight tube is sloppy (6/1000 inch) rendering the Laser nearly useless for collimating the scope. The setting circle for declination is not adjustable and appears to be incorrect by about 5-10ยบ east declination. The set screws on the hour angle and declination will not hold the scope in position with a 35 mm camera mounted on the scope. and the counterweight could be larger as it balances the scope at nearly the end of the travel for its adjustment. I like the idea of a smaller aperture and ease of use, but would probably spend more on a larger scope with a better mount with this experience, or purchase the imaging tube version and the Sky View Pro Mount. It would be nice to have a well geared / constructed manually operated mount and a radial guding eyepiece for those of use that don't want to carry electrical gear around.

The StarBlast EQ 4.5 is my first scope and I am a true amateur. I was able to put the scope together in about an hour. The directions were step by step and easy to follow. The EZ Finder spotting scope is truly easy. I spent 3 minutes aligning the spotting scope with the telescope and I was good to go. Now I just point and view! I saw a great view of the Lunar eclipse on Feb 20th. The shades of red from the eclipse were spectacular. I can't wait until Saturn comes into my sky view in a few weeks. In the meantime, I'll keep looking at Orion and the Orion nebula. A great telescope at a great price!!!

I bought my Starblast mainly for wide field, low power observing, which this telescope excels. I soon found out that this little telescope is also capable of startling high-power views of the moon! I added Orion's 3x Barlow, and found that the optics could support 150x and beyond (my record is 214x!) on a steady night! A real joy to use, right out of the box!
