Orion StarBlast 4.5 Imaging Reflector Optical Tube
  • Simply the most affordable astrophotography-optimized telescope available!
  • Big 4.5" primary mirror and fast f/4 focal ratio produce stunning images with short exposure times.
  • Fully illuminates Orion StarShoot Deep Space Imager and other small-chip CCD cameras
  • Compact, lightweight, easily transportable, and works with 1.25" eyepieces for observing
  • Offered as an optical tube assembly only, no accessories

If you're looking for an exceptional telescope for astrophotography that won't cost you big bucks, then check out this affordable alternative. We've optimized the optics of our popular short-focal-length Orion StarBlast 4.5 Imaging Reflector Optical Tube to give a fully illuminated field of view with the Orion StarShoot Deep-Space Imager and similar small-chip astronomical charge coupled device (CCD) cameras. The result is a compact imaging telescope with a price that will please the budget-conscious astrophotographer — beginner or expert — and with the performance that will give pricey refractors a run for their money.

With its big 4.5" parabolic mirror and fast f/4 focal ratio, the Orion StarBlast 4.5 Imaging Reflector Optical Tube provides exquisite, high-quality images ó and it's simply the most affordable astrophotography-optimized telescope in the market. Unlike refractors, the Orion StarBlast introduces no chromatic aberration with negligible coma. The fast focal ratio also minimizes exposure time and guiding errors.

To achieve 100% illumination with the StarShoot Deep Space Imaging Camera, we slightly widened the secondary mirror and extended the focal point further out in the focuser. The short focal length provides a wide field of view for imaging with small-chip charage coupled device (CCD) cameras. While the telescope works with standard 1.25" eyepieces (Sirius Plossl recommended) some wide-field telescope eyepieces may require the use of an extension tube to reach focus.

At only 3.7 lbs, the StarBlast 4.5 doesn't require a heavy mount and it transports easily to your favorite site. The 1.25" focuser accepts 1.25" telescope eyepieces for visual use as well.

The Orion StarBlast 4.5 Imaging Reflector Optical Tube is offered as tube assembly only, with no accessories. One-year limited warranty.

I purchased the Orion 4.5" imaging telescope and everything worked fantastic. With tube rings purchased separately, the scope mounted to my tripod. The only problem that needed a work- around was that the software provided for the ccd imager was for PC only. I use a MacBook and a Mac G4. The same thing happened with software from a different company. Why can't I image using OS X????

After years of looking up at the stars, I decided to get a telescope. I bought the Orion StarBlast 4.5 and really enjoy it. I get clear images, even in urban skies. It's an excellent telescope for the beginner. My grandson enjoys it, too.

I find the 4.5 scope very good, what I did not like is it only has a 1.25 focuser, it should have a 2" with a 1.25 converter. I can't use any of my 2" eye pieces for viewing. Other then that, I wish I would have gotten a 6" scope.

This is an "Awesome" 4.5 reflector!! I also have a 8" SCT and this little scope delivers images just as sharp!!! I mostly use this scope for photography but it is a great comet catcher as well with beautiful wide field viewing. The focus is sharp from corner to corner on my CCD chip, only limited to the seeing conditions of the night! If you're looking for a small reflector I haven't seen any better than this. I highly recommend this for the beginner or intermediate for viewing and photography. When this scope was designed they knew what they were doing!!!

I purchased the StarBlast 4.5 F/3.9 Imaging Reflector as a lightweight, portable Imaging solution as my larger scope is cumbersome to transport. First and foremost, for a 4.5" scope it is very compact and lightweight. Out of the box, no collimation adjustments were needed, the scope was ready to field test immediately. My first target for imaging was a new type of imaging target for me, as well as a challenging one. Despite a full moon, I was able to use my Starblast to capture M3 (44,000 l.y. distant) with relative ease. Even under very short exposures, the cluster was clearly defined. The optics are great, I honestly didn't expect the level of brightness or clarity that this scope can provide at a modest aperture. The one single flaw I feel could be improved on this scope is the focuser. It has a lot of play in it and doesn't move smoothly. This is nothing that can't be resolved with minor modification (lithium grease to replace the factory lubricant, and tighten the screws)or changing the focuser out. But, anyone in astrophotography knows that focusing is a very critical part of the equation so this should be improved out of the box. This would be the only issue keeping me from rating the scope a full 5 stars, the rest of the scope is magnificent. I like the scope so much that I intend to purchase the 6" Imaging OTA, and piggy back the 4.5" as a powerful guidescope. I recommend you buy the suggested tube rings and dovetail for this scope, they are a perfect fit.

I really did alot of research before the purchase, I looked at some high dollar APOs and other OTAs for the sole purpose of mounting it(piggy back) on my 10" SCT. The Starblast is very light and with a f4 ratio it makes it a very fast imager. I have already used it and am very happy. Regards James

The StarBlast 4.5 was purchaced mainly for viewing the sun with a solar filter. I can easily place it on and off the mount. Setup time is kept to a minimum. I am happy with the f/4 ratio for photography. I did have to recollimate the scope after arrival, but that is probably common after shipment.
