Orion 100mm f/6.0 Refractor Telescope Optical Tube

I needed a smaller main scope to go with my big Long-tube 6inch Refractor...
Id been looking at this OTA for quite sometime...
I did some research on Cloudy Nights online
astronomy site..
THe scope is small.. short, and works great on
my G5 mount... Optics are excellent...
When Cap stopping the front down to 55mm.. Jupiter is contrasted well... and just as good as
my other scope...
Star Hopping is a wonderful experience through
this scope with a two inch eye piece..
Issues.. The 2 inch Focal tube assembly may
have been made.. Just to beef up the scope in
general.. It really is not made for regular use of
2 inch eye pieces , with a 2 inch diagonal and 2
inch Barlow..
If you have questions.. (Call Orion)...
It does work with a 2 inch Diagonal.. However..
the focal tube will be pushed right up next to
the OTA... Play at your own risk... It may
focus.. It may not...? 2 inch, or 1 inch barlows
through the 2 inch diagonal are out..!!
The scope is easy to carry.. or easy to move on
mount...
Add some filters.. and get ready to fly...
OVer N Out...

I have used an Orion 80ST for a while
now as my "quick-look" and travel scope
and I wanted to supplement it with
something bigger. Orion's 100MM f/6.0
achromat was just right. It's a nice
combination of size/weight, aperture,
focal length and quality...all at a very
reasonable price. I have pushed it to
200X on Jupiter and Saturn without
noticeable image degradation, although
at high mag levels focusing is critical and
you need a VERY stable mount - but
that's true of any telescope. It shows
the false color you would expect of an
achromat but it isn't overwhelming.
Overall, a great performer and a great
value.

Originally purchased as a wide field
instrument to compliment my other
equipment, but trying it on the moon and
planets, it performed very well indeed. I
like the fact that it can be collimated if
needed, and the chromatic abberation is
certainly not bad at all for a f/6
achromat. This is great grab and go
scope, with sharp optics.

Despite the price, this scope is not a
toy and gives very rewarding views for
anyone on a budget or looking for a
lightweight scope that is easy to carry.
This will be my designated grab n' go
scope. The images are crisp with not too
terrible chromatic aberration
considering that it's an achromat. I've
been splitting some double stars with it
and it does well. I'd get this telescope
for a beginner any day over the
department store stuff. It's one that a
person could grow with as opposed to
outgrowing. Orion has done it again.

I got this as a holiday special (price),
not sure what to expect
performance-wise. It's a wonderful
surprise. The star test on this scope is
excellent and chromatic aberration is
not too bad. A wonderful instrument for
anyone on a budget, getting started in
astronomy, or looking for a quick grab n
go scope.

I'm a ATM so I made the dovetail plates
and adapters to mount this scope on
anything listed below and more. I wanted
a refractor for the following reasons:
LARGE finderscope. I piggyback this
scope on my 10" Cave. Yes, there are
good reasons to have a finderscope this
large, like matching star magnitudes of
popular sky charts. No, it's not the one
and only finderscope for the Cave, but I
do use it this way at times, with
/without an Amici prism. With a 2" 40mm
eyepiece it matches the view of a 5-6
degree finderscope.
White Light Solarscope- I made a good
Baader(SP?) solar filter for it and use
this scope on a mount (SVP) with a
Coronado Ha scope to do white light and
Ha views both together, side by side.
This has proved to be a great setup for
school groups and Astronomy Day viewing.
It requires and extra counterweight for
the SVP but it works very well.
Grab and go. It and the SVP are
reasonably light and easy enough to grab
and take out for short urban sessions
between long drives to a dark sky site
for all nighters with the Cave.
Specific DSOs. Some DSOs are what we
affectionately refer to as "finderscope
objects." They are pretty spread out and
a scope having greater aperture can
literally look through these objects
without seeing them. You need a good
dark sky site, but this scope can "see"
them, and so can others of similar size.
Lunar observing. You don't need a lot of
aperture for the moon and you can "push"
the power easier in this object. 200x is
about as good as it gets for general
seeing conditions where I live.
Right size and best bang per buck to
suite my needs! You can pay anything for
a telescope, but when I bought this one
it was the best deal for a well built
scope to suite my needs without breaking
the bank. That was back in 2003(?).
Still a good value.

I wanted something more than a basic
70mm refractor and this model was
perfect for my needs. It is the main
component of my portable observatory
that I can easily transport to my viewing
site. I added the Orion 9x50 right angle
viewer and together they serve very well
as a modestly priced, but quite effective
refractor and finder that holds up to
being transported in a home made case.
I have been using it now for several
weeks and I recommend it if you are
looking for a reasonable size and weight
refractor with good light gathering ability.

I first bought this scope just for viewing,
and the views are very good, even right
out of the box. but after putting my
Cannon XTi DSLR on it for some prime
focus photography I was very pleased
with the shots,so know if I dont want to
set up my other scope and photography
gear I know I have a really nice back-
up. SO LETS SEE,1. small and light
weight enough to take any where.2. very
affordable.3.nice optics. thank you orion.

OTA construction is nice, paint is good.
Doublet pair is well coated, with no
obvious defects. A little bit of dust
inside the element, but nothing to be
concerned about. Focuser was a bit
rough, but after removing the Synta
grease in favor of lithium greatly
improved feel. The optical quality is
great for the price. Collimation was
good out of the box. Star testing shows
concentric rings inside and outside of
focus. I thought the scope suffered
from a turned down edge, but after
adding yellow/green filters showed that
outside focus is quite similar to
inside. All in all, a great package for
wide field viewing.

Very happy with my purchase. Was
surprised at the optical quality. Saturn
at 200x looked very good. and have
looked at the moon at around 270x and
was still pleased with the views. Worth
the money. I got this as a light weight,
grab and go scope. There is some ca, as
is to be expected, but not bother some
to me. and the dew shield is to short.

I've owned a number of these during
past three years...
Its light enough to fit on many types and
styles of mounts.
It has a cell that can be collimated and
has over a 2 degree field of view with a
32mm 1.25 inch eyepiece.
You do not need to spend a fortune on
eyepieces to enjoy this scope. Orion's
Highlight Plossls work very well with this
scope. Their Sirius line does as well
(except I prefer the Highlight for high
power planetary viewing).
