I read quite a few reviews before purchasing and was quite pleased to see that all the positive reviews were right! The color isn't bad for a fast achro. Some color on the moon and Sirius but not too much. Nice widefield views of M35, M36, M41 and M42. The focuser is stiff and not too sensitive. Only reason it's not a 5 star.

I got my 120mm ST OTA today and want to share my initial impressions. THIS IS ONE HOT SCOPE FOR THE $$!! Yes, some CA, but surprisingly little for an f5. Airy discs nearly textbook, diffraction rings noted. Resolution and clarity on Lunar craters (at 100X, 6mm Ortho. ep) better than expected. Only minor nitpick is slightly stiff focusser with sticky lubricant on the track. Short of an ED or Petzval lens, this is as good as it gets. Should satisfy all but the most picky - especially at the price. Thanks, Orion!

I bought this scope to do some imaging with a refractor on a budget. The scope does remarkably well for an achromat. I am still getting the feel for tri-color imaging with the monochrome imager from Orion. I use an Atlas mount (unguided). Short focal length allows for decent imaging with my exposure times under 120 seconds. Great value.

I love refractors. I use them for astro and land apps. The 120ST fits nicely between my Orion 80ST and Celestron C6-R. It's big enough to see lots of good stuff in the sky with minimal distortion, yet small and portable enough to fit under the seat on my scooter! The 120ST is also lightweight enough to work reasonably well with small mounts, such as the Orion TeleTrack. The 120ST optics are very clean and sharp, especially with widefield eyepieces, such as the Orion Stratus or Edge-On series. Jupiter and Saturn look like jewels and detail on the Moon is amazing. As might be expected with an f/5 refractor, there is some CA at higher mags, but not enough to really affect the view. This scope may replace the little 80ST as my favorite!

I have been very pleased with this scope over the many times I've used it. The optics are quite good. Of course, there is some chromatic aberration which is to be expected in an achro. But, it's almost unnoticeable on most objects unless I'm deliberately looking for it. On DSOs, of course, there is none. My only regret is that Orion didn't offer an upgrade for the focuser. The stock one travels too much with even a tiny knob movement so achieving an accurate focus at higher powers is very difficult. I'm sure Orion could offer a Crayford upgrade for $100 - - I'd have paid it.

I also have the Orion ST80 f/5 and ST100 f/6 achros and have found them all to be excellent values. As Orion notes in their product description, this scope is designed for wide-field, deep sky viewing and for this it performs very well. Views have nice contrast and are very sharp. My 17mm and 22mm Nagler T4's really bring this scope to life! Lunar viewing detail is better than I expected with only minor CA on the limb. For terrestrial viewing the scope also performs very well with only moderate CA on high contrast objects which, of course, would be expected on this fast achromat. The reason I gave this scope 4 stars instead of 5 is the R&P focuser which, like my other ST's was very rough and sticky even after dissassembling and relubing. I've since replaced them all with Crayfords and the scopes' performance has improved greatly. It would be great if Orion would offer their 2" refractor Crayford as an option at time of purchase. Or even better make the Caryford available as a stand alone purchase upgrade--bet they'd sell a bunch of 'em! All in all, the ST120 is a very nice scope and an excellent value! Phil

I run this scope on an LXD75 mount for imaging DSO's. The 5" of clear aperture gives me less star blobbing than I get with a 6" or 8" newt. It's light enough for me to get 2 minute unguided exposures regularly. I'm learning to autoguide by using an ST80 as my guidescope. The two scopes are lighter than an 8" newt alone, so the mount performs well for me. As a bonus, I always spend some time at the eyepiece to relax after imaging. I easily spit the Lyrae Double Double with a 10mm Plossl, and have had good seeing nights where I can see Cassini Division in Saturn. It's definitely a wide-field scope, of course, and I only look at planets/doubles for fun at the end of the night. Overall, I love 5" of clear glass, light weight, and sharp star images. CA is there, but to my 53-year old eyes, it's just not a problem. Clear skies

I bought this scope off of a daily special and didn't realize just how special this Short Tube scope really is. It quickly and permanently replaced my 4.5" Reflector. The views are crisp and short focal length makes for a nice wide angle view when coupled with my 2" eyepiece collection. This may not be an ED scope but I'm well pleased with the price for performance ratio. It has exceeded my expectations. It's also much easier to move around than my 10" Dobsonian. Great Scope at a Great Price. I do wish I'd known there was an integrated dovetail mount base for a finder scope and I would have saved that minor cost when ordering.

The Orion 120mm Refractor is a great scope for the money. I have one piggy backing on my Meade 10" LX200 GPS for wide shots of deep space. A good alternative to a $$$ apo. Joe
