Orion 80mm ED Apo Refractor Telescope Optical Tube
  • An apochromatic refractor offered at an unprecedented low price
  • 80mm objective includes one element of FPL-53 "ED" glass, which virtually eliminates false color
  • Features a 2" aluminum Crayford-type focuser that accepts 2" or 1.25" accessories
  • Does not include mount or tripod - can be purchased separately
  • One-year limited warranty

We love those premium "apo" refractors as much as the next guy. We just don't think you should have to work a second job or put the family heirlooms on eBay to own one. Now you won't, thanks to our amazingly affordable Orion 80mm Extra-Low Dispersion Refractor Telescope Optical Tube.

It's a sweet telescope all right. With a focal length of 600mm (f/7.5), the "ED80" is wonderfully suited for visual applications on both solar system and deep-sky objects as well as for prime-focus astrophotography and charge coupled device or, "CCD" imaging.

It sports a multi-coated 80mm objective lens doublet, one element of which is crafted from Extra-Low Dispersion, or "ED" optical glass. This high-grade glass greatly reduces the chromatic aberration inherent in standard achromats. Images appear more sharply focused and color fringing around bright objects is lessened dramatically.

The objective lens is held in a machined, black anodized aluminum cell and shaded by an aluminum dew cap. Internal tube baffles ensure high contrast and prevent ghosting.

The ED80mm features a superb, backlash-free 2" Crayford-style focuser, which accepts both 2" and 1.25" diagonals. Notice the focus wheels: classy, brushed-aluminum hubs with ridged rubber grip rings. Nice touch. Set the focuser tension or lock it for imaging with the focus lock knob. The molded-in dovetail base accepts the optional Orion finder scope of your choice. Tube has a built-in 1/4"-20 plate.

At a length of just 24", the ED80mm is extremely portable. And at an affordable price so the rest of us can enjoy the pleasures of a premium refractor without the pain of the premium price!

Sold as optical tube assembly only, without accessories. Compatible tube rings are #7371, sold separately. Finished in gunmetal gray metallic. One-year limited warranty.

An absolutely wonderful telescope. I purchased the scope as part of the package that included the Sirius EQ-G GoTo mount. The Orion Sirius 80 mm ED Apo Refractor, with a focal length of 600 mm provides a relatively fast focal ratio of 7.5 if you enjoy astrophotography. If you can get a good polar alignment (as you can with this mount), this scope will allow you to get superb images of deep sky objects with unguided exposures in the 2-3 minute range. It yields a wide field of view, very little to no chromatic aberration and is well worth the investment.

This is an awesome scope for wide field imaging with DSLR. I have had it for a while now and have had a chance to shoot the Great Orion Nebula, and Andromeda with my DSLR. The results were stunning! I highly recommend this if your interested in doing some astrophotography! David Rankin

Figuring in the price this scope has surprisingly good optics. With decent quality eyepieces, aberrations are well corrected and views are pleasing. Fit and finish are adequate for the price, and the scope is quite serviceable. Note the rather large tube for an 80mm- recognize you'll need bigger rings than some other 80mm scopes.

The 80 ED has proved to be a great all around scope. Visually, it has given me a lot of pleasure. The Moon and planets look great even at high magnification. As for imaging with a CCD, I am a novice using film for 35 years. I focus with an electric focuser from ORION.My problem seems to be that sharp focus seems a bit off at f6 and with a telecompressor. Even visually low power doesn't seem as sharp as with high mag.

I purchased this product primarily for astrophotography, and have not had an opportunity to use it in this mode yet. However, I've done some experimentation with it as a terrestrial telephoto lens, and am extremely pleased with the sharpness and clarity of the images it produces. I've also used it visually both terrestrially and astronomically, and feel that the visual image quality is very very good, especially for an instrument of this small aperture.

The Orion ED 80 has been a delight to use from day one. Combined with the EQ-2 mount and single-axis drive, it is a wonderful, portable scope that gives very nice color-correct views. Low- power produces a bright, wide field of view for observing clusters such as the Pleiades, or viewing conjunctions of the Moon and planets. It is also great for tracking the path of asteroids such as Ceres or catching comets such as Tuttle, now visible in the norther sky. At 125X magnification it gives beautiful close-up views of the moon and left me feeling that under good conditions it might even bear a bit more magnification. It also reveals the dark markings on Mars as well as the north polar hood. Mechanically it is very solid and the focuser very smooth. I have spent several hours observing with it and am satisfied with its performance in evey way. Thanks, Orion.

The ED80 is a fantastic little scope, especially for imaging. The objective produces color correct, pinpoint stars and high contrast views. With the appropriate field flattener/reducer one can produce images that rival scopes costing 3 or 4 times as much. Thank you, Orion, for this little wonder.
