Orion 80mm f/11.4 Refractor Telescope Optical Tube
  • Ideal for use as a guide scope
  • Guiding enables long exposure astrophotography
  • 1.25" focuser
  • One-year limited warranty

This quality Orion 80mm F/11.4 Refractor Telescope Optical Tube makes the perfect guide scope for doing long-exposure astrophotography. The 80mm-diameter air-spaced achromatic lens has a focal length of 910mm (f/11.4) and provides plenty of light collection for targeting faint guide stars. Multicoatings keep light loss from reflection to a minimum. The rack-and-pinion focuser (1.25") is made of aluminum and features a focus lock knob. The aluminum telescope optical tube is finished in glass black enamel and has an aluminum dew/glare shield. Six internal baffles prevent internal glare and provide great image contrast. No finder scope, telescope diagonal, telescope eyepiece, or guide scope rings are included. We recommend purchase of Guide Scope Rings and Guide Scope Mounting Bar for attachment of guide scope to SkyView Pro or Atlas telescope mounts.

Unlike many other users, I bought mine to use as a separate telescope, to supplement my reflector. I paired it with my Alt-az mount, and added a 6x30 Orion finder. Views of the moon and planets have been most satisfying, chromatic aberration is minimal. With a good eyepiece, such as Orion Epics, V- block "anti-fringe" filter. and a sturdy mount, it is a fine telescope on its own.

I have never given any orion product i've got less than a 5 star rating. However, this time, i have to give this OTA a 3 star. Let me start with the positives: The optics are top notch and this OTA is absolutly GREAT for guiding. when paired up with the StarShoot AutoGuider, it is a match made in heaven. The ONLY Negative about this OTA is the focuser! It is not that good at all. when i recieved my OTA, the focuser felt cheap, stiff, jerky, and rough. My suggestion to ORION: Put a better focuser on it and raise the price a bit if need be. If the scope cost a lil more but had a better focus...it would still be worth the money. Don't sacrifice quality to keep the price low.

Optics and tube are top notch. It works great with the SSAG. The focuser is junk though. Had to replace it with the GSO 2 speed Crayford. It cannot be used as is for guiding with the focuser that it comes with!

I have been working on astro-imaging in my new observatory and needed a quality guide scope. Using an 8 inch F/5 newtonian I wanted something that would not only look good against the 8 inch OTA but perform as well. So far the scope has proven itself worthy. The only fault I can see is the focuser. Not that it is bad, it could be better. A little adjustment here and there and it works fine. I took my images to well over 5 min. guided. Then I switched off from DSLR imaging to CCD imaging and rarely use the scope. Overall, I highly recommend this OTA as a guidescope.

I'm imaging with a Meade 14" LX200GPS - a scope with a relatively long focal length. I needed light weight & long focal length in my guidescope, and couldn't be more pleased with Orion's 80mm f/11.3. Nice crisp stars, good focuser, and an unbelievable low price.
