We are very pleased with the 120ST. It
is our first scope. We are learning the
night skies while learning the scope. We
consider the purchase price money well
spent. Also, the support we've gotten
from Orion has been great.

It appears to be a very good scope but
the setting circles are hard to read at
night with that red flashlight that we
use. One of your earlier models that I
bought 7 years ago from Orion had the
setting circles in white numerals and
markings that was easy to see at night.
We need setting circles that are easier to
see at night.

I have had my 120ST for about six
weeks now, and my impression of it is
still 5 stars. In the last dozen years I
have had 5 other telescopes, but either
the optics did not satisfy me, they were
inconvenient to use, or the aperture was
not sufficient for my interests (DSO).
None of that applies to the the 120 ST.
The optics are excellent and the aperture
is sufficient to resolve the brighter
globulars. It is very light efficient for it's
aperture, and compared well against a
6" reflector on the famous Ring nebula.
On the right mount it is very easy and
convenient to use. I plan on keeping
this one for the duration.
It is not perfect. There is, of course,
some CA, but with the addition of the
Orion V-block filter, it is minimized.
Stepping up to ED-type eyepieces
reduces it even more.
I purchased the OTA version, as I prefer
alt-az mounts for convenience.
This 'scope on the Vixen Porta is a very
handy, easy to use, and efficient set-up.
I also recommend a right-angle finder
scope AND a Rigel Quickfinder (it does
what the name implies)
Short of moving to a true APO, I could
not think of what to change. Taking into
account it's reasonable price, I am a
very happy camper.

I bought this one as a companion to my
150mm f/8 refractor. As Orion states,
the ST120mm is not designed for high-
magnification study of planets, etc. This
gem excels for wide-field views,
ESPECIALLY if you upgrade to 2"
EPs...with my 36mm EP, this 120mm f/5
yields a whopping 4.2 degree FOV. With
that large a field, I find it redundant to
even put a finder scope on this
instrument! Planets are okay for quick,
casual looks (instead of a filter I prefer
using the aperture stop, making this
puppy a 50mm f/12!) Again, though,
this jewel makes sweeping the dust
lanes between Sagittarius and Scorpio a
sheer joy...it's forte is that of being
able,
again with a 2" EP, to take in the entire
Veil Nebula. If I want magnification and
detail, that's where the 150mm refractor
comes in. Between the two instruments,
I've almost got what one of those ultra-
expensive APO packages will deliver. I
can't sufficiently recommend the ST120
as an instrument to complement, say,
the garden variety 8" SCT...this is a
wonderful secondary instrument, but I
don't think I'd endorse the ST120mm as
one's sole telescope.

This little scope is probably one of the
most under-rated telescopes on the
market. For a fast acromat refractor,
the optics are excellent and very bright
for a 5" aperture. I use this scope for
portability, fast setup and observation. I
have used this scope for imaging with
excellent results, but I prefer reflectors
for this purpose.
This scope is very portable. I can pick up
the entire unit and carry it around over
my shoulder. To polar align, I set it down
on the ground and align it approximately
on Polaris. This gives me sufficient
accuracy for over 30 minutes of
observation on any DSO, and It doesn't
take any more then 30 seconds to do
this.
I have taken this scope to over 600x on
lunar and planetary targets with good
seeing conditions and the views were
excellent. I have resolved stars in
distant globular clusters with Tele Vue
EP's that you would not expect to resolve
with a 5" aperture scope.
You really get the bang for the buck with
this tiny workhorse.

I purchased this scope a few years ago
and still think it's terrific. I use
this for a
lot of DSO work, where it truly shines.
If you're into clusters, you won't find a
better scope. For planets, the short focal
length (and the color stuff), it ain't so
good.
The best EP is the 18mm. Gives you
enough magnification and field.
Typically I put the 18 in there and don't
play musical eye pieces like I do with
other scopes.
I wish I had the $ to fully explore the 2"
EP capabilities.
Like other reviewers have said, toss the
finder and get the red dot or telrad.
I'd recommend this product to anyone.

I bought this scope used, and when I got
it home I was a bit skeptical of the
results. But after spending some time
with this sweet baby under clear skies,
my doubts were put to rest! This scope
is ideal for those looking to downsize
from larger scopes, as well as budding
amateur astronomers.
As advertised, this scope is ideal for
wide-field, deep-sky viewing, and in
that regard, it does not disappoint!
Compact globular clusters like M2 and
M15 can be easily resolved, and nebulas
like M8, M16, and M20 are very easily
detected as well. Even the Veil nebula
can be detected without the use of an
O-III filter.
Even though this scope is meant to be a
wide-field scope, it also performs well
on planets. Jupiter's bands are easy
pickings, and though there was a bit of
turbulence in the atmosphere during my
testing, the Great Red Spot can be
detected in moments of calm and clarity.
I haven't been able to observe Saturn
with this scope yet, but I have no doubt
it will deliver a clear image.
As sweet as this scope is, it does have
a few problems, but they can be easily
fixed. First, I recommend foregoing the
6x30 viewfinder that comes standard with
this scope in favor of a red dot finder,
or a reticle finder like a Rigel Quick
Finder, or Orion's EZ Finder. A Telrad
would be impractical for this scope due
to its size.
As with most refractors in this price
range, chromatic aberration is present
in the optics, but it's nothing that a
good filter can't resolve. As far as the
mount goes, it's solid and stays
well-balanced, provided you don't
heavier eyepieces such as the Nagler
13mm Ethos. But even if you do use an
Ethos with it, you'll be blown away by
the view! It's simply amazing. It's a
good thing this mount comes provided
with right ascension and declination locks!
I also have an EQ-3 Single-Axis motor to
drive this scope. It might not be
(suitable) for astrophotography, but it
gets the job done. It's great for
keeping an object in the field of view
for long periods of time, making it
ideal to show to newcomers at star parties.
So, now that I've had a chance to really
test drive my 120ST, I can say that
aside from the problems cited above, I'm
very happy with it. I would have given
this unit a 5, but there is room for
improvement. I give the optics a 4.5,
fit and finish a 5, mount a 4, and
user-friendliness a 4. Overall, I'd give
this scope a well-deserved 4.5. I'd feel
horrible if I gave this little gem just
a 4! For the asking price, this scope is
a steal!
I continue to be impressed by Orion's
dedication to customer support, and
their ever-increasing attention to
detail. Thanks to Orion for such a
wonderful little scope!
Clear skies!

I have to admit there was a little doubt
in my buying this scope. But I must say,
I was surprised at it's clear viewing, nice
an sharp. Moon looks great! as far as
setup is concerned no problem at all.
I've always looked at the optics of a
scope, not the setup. The secret to setup
is patience. Portable, light, nice, I'm
happy with it AAA. Barry

I'll try and be brief, but that probably
won't happen... I'm 33 and just started
this hobby less than 6 months ago. I
first bought a cheap (but decent) 70mm
refractor on a small a-a mount, and
really enjoyed it. I then purchased the
AstroView 120ST EQ Refractor (after
months of daily debate/research, it
showed up as the Deal of the Day and I
couldn't resist.) I wanted to see what
an EQ mount was like, and what
difference there was between 3 & 5
inches of aperture. Unfortunately due
mostly to weather, I've only been able to
use it 3 times so far...
First of all, unlike my other scope - this
is not a toy capable of being picked up
and moved to a different location in my
yard. It's alot bigger than i anticipated,
and a typical setup & alignment (plus
takedown) can take up to a half hour.
Polar alignment is easy and finding &
tracking objects is a breeze. Using a
Barlow and a newly purchased 6mm
Expanse wide-field eyepiece, I get
amazing views of Saturn (at x200) with
plenty of extra background to view
nearby objects. Using the included
25mm Plossl is great for scanning larger
areas, and the scope provides dynamite
contrast at lower magnifications. The
chromatic aberration is apparent on the
bright stars & the moon, but it doesn't
bother me at all. I haven't used a big
Newtonian yet - but other than $2000
APO with a $1500 Atlas mount, I can't
possibly see how my refractor
experience could be improved.

Ive been using this scope for almost 2
years now and it has never let me down.
I'm impressed every time I look through
it. It will never leave my collection as
others have in the past. Definitely a
keeper, Great scope Orion!

The Orion 120ST EQ refractor is a real
quality instrument and the performance
is outstanding. There is nothing that I
have seen that can compete with this
scope for the money. I am completely
satisfied and would buy another one in a
heartbeat.

This is a stunning instrument. I had
been saving and thinking about getting it
for a couple of years and I cannot
believe I hesitated. This giant window
on the universe is effortless to use and
what a view! Coupled with the stop
down cap and the 12.5mm Edge On
eyepiece, the planets come closer and
clearer than I have ever seen before.
This is a beautiful telescope. I love
looking at nebulae and this scope really
loves showing them!

My wife purchased this for my
anniversary present because it was the
deal of the day and because I prompted
her to do so!
I am extremely happy with this
telescope! My only complaint and the
ONLY reason it did not get 5 stars is the
serious fringe coloration of anything
bright. Purchasing the fringe filter from
Orion does take care of that problem.
A bargain on sale! I have taken some
cheap webcam stuff of the moon already
and its wonderful!

Cool scope, not as light as you would
think it is but I can still lift it and the
tripod up and walk it up from the
basement and outside. Was shipped with
a beat up focuser shaft but that problem
was addressed by orion promptly. Vista
users+free starry night pack= Pain in
the rear to the point that it is next to
useless, it shut down my computer so
many times I just ended up trashing it. I
wrote orion about that as well and they
never bothered to respond. The scope is
great but don't get your hopes up about
the $70 value starry night pack (yeah
right its a great $70 value free-bee for
vista users).

This is my second Orion telescope and
was a 'deal of the day' - and what a
deal. The views are bright, clear, and
spectacular. The telescope sets up with
ease. The mount tracks well. The polar
scope is accurate and took no
allignment. This is an excellent
telescope and a 'deal' at full price.

A couple years ago I decided to act upon
a life long dream of gazing at the stars
with my own eyes. I grew tired of
looking at stellar object photographs in
books and magazines, as well as images
on the internet. I did some serious
research and found Orion Telescopes to
be superior to the competition in Quality,
Affordability, and Customer Service. I
then ordered my first scope (Orion
Astroview 80EQ). After my first
stargazing session I was hooked. I
wanted to go deep (really deep). That
same night I ordered the Astroview
120ST EQ. Since it's arrival I have been
completely in awe at it's capabilities. This
scope is amazingly versitale to the point
that I have yet to find something it is not
capable of doing. As I live next to a mall,
walmart, and have a major interstate all
within several hundred yards from where
i live, light pollution is a major problem.
However, this scope has taken me deep
into the Cygnus Rift. It's shown me
many of the wonders in the Scotum Star
Cloud. Shown me structure in the
galactic Leo Triplet. And, it's left me
speechless gazing upon the immense
beauty of the Orion Nebula. One of the
benefits of this scope is its adaptability.
It steps easily into astrophotography just
by mounting a camera. So whether you
are looking in-system at sunspots, the
moon and planets, or whether you are
delving into the wonders beyond our
little slice of the universe this scope is
one fantastic scope.
