As any telescope aficionado will tell you, the virtue of refractors lies in their pristine image quality. The problem has always been the price: refractors cost more per inch of aperture than any other telescope design. That's still true, but steady advances in precision lens manufacturing technology are bringing those prices down.

Down to below $350, in the case of our remarkable Orion AstroView 90 Equatorial Refractor Telescope. And without compromising the quality of the equatorial mount or standard accessories, we might add. This is a soundly constructed, great performing telescope that any new backyard astronomer will appreciate from the first night out.

A Revealing Night Out
When we took the AstroView out for an evening spin recently, we first targeted Jupiter. Cloud banding starkly visible, as were all four of its major moons. Then, the crescent Moon. With the 10mm telescope eyepiece (91x power), the rugged relief and shadow play along the terminator were transfixing. On to the Orion Nebula, where at 36x the four Trapezium stars appeared as perfect blue pinpoints surrounded by a pretty patch of greenish gas. We then powered up to 91x, and — Wow! — the nebula seemed to sprout wings, which spanned nearly the entire field of view! An occasional tweak of the equatorial mount's R.A. slow-motion cable kept the glow centered in the telescope eyepiece. Next, the Beehive Star Cluster (M44) in Cancer. A dazzling splash of bright speckles filled the field at 36x. And so the evening went. The multi-coated 90mm achromatic objective lens (910mm focal length, f/10) served up surprisingly high-contrast images — despite our being awash in neighborhood porch and street lights.

The Orion AstroView 90 Euqatorial Refractor Telescoep will provide you with many such evenings of heavenly browsing — at an unprecedented low price. It comes fully equipped with a 6x30 achromatic finder telescope, two fully coated 1.25" Sirius Plössl telescope eyepieces (25mm and 10mm), mirror star diagonal, dust cap, and 1/4"-20 adapter on one of the tube rings for piggyback camera attachment. The precision EQ-2 equatorial mount provides a firm foundation. It features dual setting circles, slow-motion cables, oversized lock knobs, and a height-adjusting aluminum tripod with large accessory tray. Add an optional electronic drive for hands-free star tracking! Weighs 23.7 lbs. One-year limited warranty.

Orion AstroView 90 Equatorial Refractor Telescope

This telescope is something else! I am thrilled with it. Very durable, reliable, great optics. Fairly easy to use for a complete novice like myself. I gave it one less star than perfect because the instructions to put it together out of the box were a bit confusing. Took about twice as long for me to set it up than it suggested. Maybe I'm a dolt...I don't know. But I love the telescope.

I am just starting to get back into Astronomy, after being away from it for a few years. I am not a beginner, but after being away from it, I am approaching it as a newbie, since the technology and products that have come out in the last few years have dramatically changed. This Telescope is Great value for the money, it is powerful enough to keep Amateur astronomers, New Astronomers busy for years to come! The Scope is very well made, even the EQ mount that it is on, is very easy to use for first time users, after a little reading of the manual supplied on how to set it up, and Align the mount. It produces absolutely fantastic images through the eyepieces that are supplied to get you started, and you won't be discouraged from frustration, which happens to alot of newcomers because they expect something that they see in a magazine. The eyepieces are powerful enough to get superb detail of The Moon (probably every new Astronomer's first target with their new scope), as well as details of the other close planets...Bands on Jupiter, and the Rings of Saturn. After using this scope, you will definately get bit by the Astronomy Bug!! (Or again, as in my case!!) I Certainly recommend this Telescope. Also, as a sidenote...Orion truly does have 100% excellent Customer Support for any type of help or questions that you would have, so I encourage anyone who purchases from them to take them up on their support, because they really are there to help! Probably the best support I have experienced!

Orion AstroView 90 Equatorial Refractor Telescope

This was my first upgraded telescope from the traditional Department store scopes. At first light, I was absolutely amazed with it. Amazed with it's views even in cloudy or light polluted skies it's ability to capture light was outstanding. Great for planetary and double stars. Although faint and barely recognizable in my skies I was still able to see some of the deeper sky objects such as galaxies and nebula. My first orion scope and definitely not my last. The price was affordable, and the scope itself is relatively easy to move around even fully assembled. The mount is sturdy and moderately accurate. The slow motion cables and focuser were a little tight out of the box but easily fixed. Overall I am extremely happy with my purchase and it will definitely not be my last.

...The optics are bright and clear. The mount is stable and, with a little practice, the setting circles work fine. Orion offers an excellent selection of accessories. The scope is light weight and setup is quick and easy. I regularly find many objects of interest. You will have little problem with large star groups if you use a long eyepiece. This is an enjoyable scope to use and offers lots of possibilities for beginner and intermediate back yard astronomers.
