Orion EON 120 ED Apochromatic Refractor Telescope
  • A breakthrough in performance and value, our biggest EON will delight the avid observer or imager.
  • 120mm doublet lens crafted with FPL-53 "ED" glass to virtually eliminate chromatic aberration.
  • Focal length of 900mm (f/7.5) provides excellent magnification and resolving power.
  • Machined aluminum 2" Crayford focuser has dual-speed focus knobs with 11:1 fine-focus ratio.
  • Retractable lens shade, tube rings and mounting plate, finder scope base, carrying case included.

When we introduced our first 120mm ED telescope in 2006, priced at $1,999.95, we said it represented a true breakthrough in performance and value. It did. So how do we characterize its successor, the Orion EON 120mm Extra-Low Dispension Apochromatic Refractor Telescope, given that it has a bevy of new, high-end features and value-added accessories, yet costs not a dollar more? Well, the latest true breakthrough in performance and value, of course!

One look at it, or through it, and you realize this is one magnificent telescope. It's a telescope that delivers strikingly detailed views of planetary subjects yet has enough aperture to render revealing images of all the Messier objects and many other deep-space denizens — and we mean visual and photographic images.

The EON 120ED's Refractor Telescope optics consist of a fully multi-coated, air-spaced 120mm objective doublet lens of exceptional quality, containing one element of FPL-53 extra-low dispersion — "ED" — optical glass. The extra-low dispersion glass virtually eliminates the color fringing around bright objects resulting from chromatic aberration. Images are crisp, sharp, and color-pure, even at magnifications upwards of 250x. The big 120mm refractor telescope objective has a 900mm focal length (f/7.5), a combination that provides excellent high-contrast resolving power, with enough magnification to home in on smaller targets. Baffles inside the optical tube, glare threads in the focuser drawtube, and a retracting lens shade/dew shield eliminate unwanted glare.

Like all EON telescopes, the 120 Extra-Low Dispersion has a beautifully machined Crayford-type 2" focuser with a removable 1.25" insert, allowing use of either 2" or 1.25" accessories. The gearless Crayford design provides smooth, zero image-shift focusing. The dual-speed focusing knobs have an 11:1 micro-focusing ratio to ensure you achieve the critical focus for your images. The focuser is rotatable 360 degrees, allowing comfortable telescope eyepiece positioning or easy image framing when you're taking pictures. A dovetail finder scope base comes standard and accommodates any Orion finder telescope or EZ Finder.

The Orion EON 120 ED Apochromatic Refractor Telescope comes with two hinged tube rings and a dovetail mounting plate. Just add your favorite telescope mount and you're ready for astronomical adventure! Also included are an aluminum objective lens cap and a sturdy, aluminum-clad carrying case with custom foam interior and carrying handle. Weighs 14 lbs., 9 oz. One-year limited warranty.

Beautiful fit and finsh . Thumbs up on looks. The real test though is how it functions . Your package was much easier to set up and use than I ever imagined. As for the lookin - beautiful and CLEAR views . I am an educator and I have already learned from your scope package , not to mention the awsome pictures taken with a Sony Alpha DSLR , all of which have been taken back to my classroom and added to my curriculum . SIX STARS FOR SHURE ! THANKS , DENIS

Very pleased with the 120MM ED APO from Orion. Versatility and price performance are evident from the start. This scope will serve both the astrophotographer and the visual observer. Easy to set up at remote sights and the optics are excellent. A set of quality eyepieces will put the observer on par with much larger scopes without the aberrations or collimation difficulties. A great investment that will serve both the intermediate and advanced astronomer.

Having used refractors owned by friends, when I saw the EON 120mm advertised I decided it was time to buy one for myself. I was happy to see the careful and secure packing and the shiny black finish of what has turned out to be an excellent telescope in terms of resolution and contrast of celestial objects in the M, NGC categories along with the Moon and Sun. I am happy to write this review and encourage others wanting a very nice refractor to purchase the EON 120mm.

This is a nice scope for the money, but I think the advertising is a bit misleading. Mine shows some false color on brighter objects. It is much better than an achromat, but not nearly as well corrected as a true 3-element apo. Also, mine has "CHINA" stamped on the lens cell - which isn't there in the photos on the Orion website. They should update the photos to show how it really looks. Fit and finish is better than a typical Orion telescope. The focuser is adequate. This is a fair price for this telescope, but if you want a true apo, you will not get it at this price. That being said, I am happy with mine - I plan on using it for public star parties where I would not bring my more expensive telescopes.

My new EON 120mm ED refractor arrived well packed and on time from Orion. While setting this scope up I must say the fit and finish is second to none, this is one good looking scope. Under the night sky the scope was a wonder to use the star test was perfect in this scope. When viewing Vega with a high power eyepiece there was no off color whatsoever. Stars were pin points of light. At a local star party folks that look through the EON 120mm agreed that the views the EON was giving of Saturn that night was the best of all the scopes there. The views of Saturn were tack sharp. The views of Jupiter were just as good with with lots of detail. The great red spot--or should I say pale white spot--was easy to see, once again there was no off color. On the moon the views were some of the best I have seen no false color what so ever and the detail was wonderful. The EON 120mm is one fine ED refractor and a scope that anyone would be proud to own.

Orion's EON 120mm Apochromatic Refractor A spectacular instrument and an incredible performer...at an affordable price! The mechanics: Beautiful to look at as well as looking though. Functional dew shield, retracts for transport. Glossy black paint (I feel like waxing it to keep the shine!) The two-speed Crayford focuser is smooth and precise with a lock screw allowing the use of heavy eyepieces or cameras. The rings and Vixen Dovetail bar are robust, allowing precise balancing. Even an Orion bracket for your finder/red dot is included. A sturdy case with room for a 2" diagonal and eyepieces is a nice touch. The weight is heavy but not enough for a one person to attach the mount. I use a Celestron CG-5 equatorial mount (GoTo) with this instrument. It accomodates it easily. Optics: The images are AWESOME! The stars are round and perfectly collimated out of the box. The diffraction rings are distinct ant concentric on one side of focus, a perfect round blur on the other side of focus. No flares, spikes or distortions. I cannot detect any false color on the limb of the moon, Jupiter, Saturn or bright stars. The sky background is dark in the eyepiece and no glare. Absolutely magnificent! Visually: A few critical objects. Jupiter at 128x revealed a wealth of belt/band structure, even if it was low on the horizon. Saturn looked like a picture, with Casinni gap, shadow of the ball on the rings and several moons. The first quarter moon looked like a textbook photograph! The detail was sharp and clear. I could see the straight wall, Messier A and B craters easily. I used a Nagler 7mm eyepiece. I tried "splitting" some challenging double stars. Izar in Bootes (2.9") was split at 128X showing contrasting colors of blue and orange, the famous "Double- Double" Epsilon Lyrae (2,8"/2.2") reveals dark sky between the four components. Rasalgethi in Hercules and Algieba in Leo (4.6") were beautiful circular points! Digital Images: My students and I took images of the frirst quarter on June 11 at 9 to 10PM PST. Spectacular images at prime focus (900mm FL, f/7.5) with my digital Canon Rebel! Without enhancing (raw image), this is one of the best photos of the first quarter moon I've took! The limb of the moon revealed rare view of Mare Marginis, and great detail near the terminator! I wish I could send you the image! I'm extemely satisfied with the EON 120mm Refractor. It well exceeds my expectations. I can't wait to see deep sky objects when the moon wanes. Thank you! --Hal Jandorf Astronomy Instructor Moorpark and Los Angeles Valley Colleges

120mm EON Apochromatic Refractor First light was last night. I'm absolutely AMAZED with this instrument! Best view of Jupiter of any telescope I've owned in my 40 years of observing! Perfect split of Izar in Bootes, Rasalgethi in Hercules, Algieba in Leo amd Esilon Lyra...the famous "double-double" at 4mm eyepiece at 225X! The contrast of the stars in the inky-black sky was beautiful! Perfect images! First Quarter Moon was spectacular, the sharpness and clarity was outstanding. The most color free image was amazing....chromatic aberration was eliminated! The digital image of the moon was taken at prime focus (FL 900mm, f/7.5). Without enhancing, the raw image was astounding! The detail: Straight Wall, Alpine Valley, crater Cassini...the contrast on the lunar surface was the best! This refractor will be my special telescope, every other scope's images are second rate! Thanks, Orion, for allowing this first rate premium the telescope in the affordable range! I can't wait to set it up and observe tonight!!! --Hal Jandorf Astronomy Professor Moorpark College

The EON 120 MORE than lives up to it's advertising... It delivers superb visual images of the moon and planets, at all magnifications (including STUPID-HIGH magnifications well above 100X/inch of aperture on the moon, Saturn, and even shrinking Mars!!!). Star tests to date have been VERY promising, indicating a high level of correction. There's no visible color fringing in-focus on bright stars, or along the lunar limb or terminator... Stars are sharp across the field... It doesn't GET a lot better than this, and certainly not at THIS price!!! The scope is a natural for my Atlas EQ-G mount, but I've been pleasantly surprised at how well my SVP mount (with VSP's) handles it as well... The SVP is mounted on a JMI Wheeley Bar, so with THIS setup, it becomes virtually a grab and go scope, as well as a serious lunar/planetary tool. Thanks Orion!!! So... When can we expect an EON 152??? I'm READY!!! But you can't have the 120 back... That's here for the duration!!! Jan Owen
