Orion Observer 70mm Altazimuth Refractor Telescope
  • A great telescope for beginners interested in nighttime stargazing and daytime terrestrial viewing
  • 70mm aperture and 700mm focal length for wonderful views of the moon, planets, nebulas and galaxies
  • Includes a sturdy tripod and an altazimuth mount for simple horizontal and vertical movement
  • Includes two eyepieces, finder scope, focuser, diagonal, and FREE Starry Night astronomy software
  • One-year limited warranty

Telescopes needn't be exclusively nighttime creatures. By virtue of its altazimuth mount, this one works well for both daytime terrestrial viewing and nighttime astronomical use. The Orion Observer 70mm Altazimuth Refractor Telescope offers intuitive up-down, left-right motion to make maneuvering the telescope easy. Whether for panning a scenic landscape or surveying the Milky Way for star clusters, this telescope provides a pleasant experience.

The Observer 70mm Altazimuth Refractor Telescope is well suited to beginners of any age. It is lightweight and compact so it's easy to carry to your observing location, be it out on the lawn or an hour's drive into the hills.

Its glossy black optical tube is made of seamless aluminum and outfitted with a smooth-action rack-and-pinion focuser on one end and a dew cap/glare shield on the other. Housed inside is a multi-coated, achromatic glass objective lens that's 70mm in diameter, with a focal length of 700mm (f/10). This lens takes in 36% more light than a 60mm lens. Bottom line: you'll see more. So, if you can afford the modest additional cost of an Observer 70mm over a 60mm refractor, it will reward you with brighter images and, for astronomy, a larger repertoire of objects to see. You'll enjoy outstanding looks at the Moon's cratered surface, Jupiter's cloud bands and moons, Saturn and its rings, the majestic Orion Nebula, and the mind-boggling Andromeda Galaxy, to name just a few of the treasures you can see.

We specially engineered the altazimuth mount to provide much greater stability than the standard "off the shelf" altazimuth mounts. It has an altitude micro-motion control to allow very fine aiming adjustments.

The tube and mount are supported on a sturdy aluminum tripod that adjusts to a comfortable height. It looks so good, you'll want to keep your Observer 70mm on display when you're not using it.

The Observer 70mm telescope comes with everything you need to start observing right away. Standard accessories include a 5x crosshair finder telescope, mirror star diagonal, 10mm (70x) and 25mm (28x) Explorer II telescope eyepieces, and a tripod accessory tray.

It's a telescope that will keep any observer entranced for years. Get in on the fun, get an Orion Observer 70mm Altazimuth Refractor Telescope today! One-year limited warranty.

Sky & Telescope Magazine — December 2005
"The best refractor in our roundup."

"The refractor with the best optics was the Orion Observer 70mm."

"The one exception [to scopes with jiggly tripods] was the Orion Observer refractor, which settled down in about half the time of the others, resulting in a much more enjoyable viewing experience."

"If you'll be doing a fair amount of daytime viewing, the Orion Observer 70mm refractor is worth considering since it provides a right-side-up (though mirror-reversed) view."

My first telescope, i wasnt sure what to expect. I am very happy with it. So far from my limited view of the sky, i have watched jupiter and its moons, and its amazing.I plan to buy another eyepiece for a bit higher magnification, i believe a little more is needed. The 70mm refractor is an excellent beginning unit thats priced fairly. The red finder scope also works quite well.

Nice scope great optics, easy assembly. Was able to see rings of Saturn at 28x barely but sharply under horrible light polluted skies and overcast skies. At 70x it was a pleasure under the same conditions. Saturn is edgewise in 2009 now and you could see also a clear line across the planet. The planet was a beautiful amber color. I like the view as much as the view from Weslyen University's 16 inch scope I looked through last night although the view was smaller in the Observer 70mm. I highly recommend this scope for a beginner. Blown away. This has great resolving power thats much more important than high magnification for a beginner.

This is our first telescope and my Daughters and I are really enjoying the experience. Even though the first 4 days after receiving it, it was cloudy and overcast the entire time.

I bought this scope as a grab-n-go and second scope to my 12" Dob. I wanted something I can pickup and be observing on a moment's notice and requires no collimation or maintenance before each session. So far, this scope has given me that. It does have CA on the brightest planets and stars, but I had expected that. In the short time I've had it I've observed some of the more difficult M-catalog objects like M1 and M33 along with the easier ones. It doesn't show the detail of my 12" dob, nor will it resolve globular clusters, but it does a lot for a VERY AFFORDABLE 70mm achromat. I must state I haven't used the included eyepieces as I'm using my 25, 18, 12.5, 9 UO Orthos, and 2.8x Klee. The scope can handle the power and provides nice sharp contrasty images. I find the focuser pleasantly smooth and easy to use. The new tripod and improved accessory tray has proven remarkably sturdy for it's weight. It does have some wiggle when trying to focus at high power. But it is sturdy enough to easily achieve focus and both Alt and Az motions are smooth. And compared to some of it's competition which uses plastic mount and tripod, all metal is a big plus. I'm giving this scope a 4, as it does have a few "bugs" that are easily worked out. But, if you're looking for a beginner scope, then consider it a 5 - I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this scope. It is much better than most of it's competition in this price and size range.

I have really enjoyed using the 70 mm Altazimuth reflector so far. It was very easy to set up out of the box and weighs next to nothing for easy transport. Views of star clusters, Jupiter and it's moons, and the Moon have been very nice (more on the list to go). The Moon images were very sharp. The Hercules cluster came in well too with the low power eyepiece and in conjunction with a Barlow lens. I switched out the eyepieces with others I own and also put them into my 4.5 reflector with almost identical views on the same objects. The focus worked well and the entire field of view had no noticeable distortions. My only issue I can come up with is the vertical sometimes wants to slip a little depending on where the tightener is located, but this can easily be tightened- just may have to hold the scope tube in place to not lose the target until that is done. Overall I am very pleased. I wanted a small, inexpensive, and easily moved scope that would deliver quality views. The scope would still be great at a higher price- definitely a great deal on a great little scope. Note from Orion: This product is a refractor.

Starting out with a larger and more powerful reflector, I learned the difficulty in locating and tracking. Several evenings ended in disappointment. I decided to give Orion's 70mm refractor a shot. Although the red dot locator seems to work only when it wants to, the scope's power and clarity is very satisfying and manual tracking is very easy. The first night I set it up, I could easily see the bands on Jupiter and that really impressed me.
