Orion Observer 70mm Equatorial Refractor Telescope
  • An exceptional starter telescope at a very affordable price
  • 70mm aperture and 700mm focal length for excellent optical quality
  • Includes sturdy tripod and equatorial mount for convenient slow-motion celestial tracking
  • Includes two eyepieces, finder scope, focuser, diagonal and FREE Starry Night astronomy software
  • One year limited warranty

The tried-and-true 60mm refractor does a good job of showing beginning stargazers some of what the night sky has to offer. But we wanted a telescope with even more oomph, more performance — one that could reveal an even greater variety of stellar gems and provide greater resolution of old favorites, like the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, and the Orion Nebula. So we came up with the Orion Observer 70mm Equatorial Refractor Telescope. More oomph, but still as easy to operate as Orion's Observer 60mm, and still highly affordable.

It features a multi-coated, achromatic glass objective lens that's 70mm in diameter, with a focal length of 700mm (f/10). This lens takes in 36% more light than a 60mm lens. Bottom line: you'll see more. So if you can afford the modest additional cost of an Observer 70mm over a 60mm refractor telescope, it will reward you with brighter images and a larger repertoire of objects to see.

The optical tube is crafted from black-enameled aluminum and outfitted with a smooth-action rack-and-pinion focuser on one end and a dew cap/glare shield on the other. The tube is held in quick-releasing tube rings on the Equatorial-1 Equatorial mount. Also made of aluminum, this mount lets the user manually "track" celestial objects with the slow-motion controls. For added convenience, an optional Equatorial-1M electronic drive can be installed to provide automatic, hands-free tracking.

The tube and mount are supported on a sturdy aluminum tripod that adjusts to a comfortable height. It looks so good, you'll want to keep your Observer 70mm on display when you're not using it!

The Observer 70mm Equatorial comes with everything you need to start observing right away, including a star diagonal and 25mm (28x) and 10mm (70x) Explorer II telescope eyepieces (1.25").

This refractor telescope is a great choice for those just getting started in astronomy. It is lightweight and compact so it's easy to carry to your observing location, be it out on the lawn or an hour's drive into the hills. It offers optical performance that will keep any observer entranced, evening after evening. Get in on the fun, get an Orion Observer 70mm Equatorial Refractor Telescope today! One-year limited warranty.

I have owned this Telescope for about 6 months now and have used it both in warm and winter conditions. The Observer 70mm is both optically stable and able to see both the moon and close planets clearly. I was able to see Jupiter and IO with only a slight haze (it was a windy and cold night with some clouds). The storage tray is very handy and the controls are smooth and easy to adjust without having to leave looking through the eye piece. The sight is also easy to use once properly aligned. After some practice it will be easy to target objects while still using the high powered lens. I recommend that before you think of purchasing additional eye pieces that you spend some time using the telescope first. The included software is very easy to use and is packed with information which can allow you to print out star charts. The software can be set so that it will automatically update from the internet. Additionally, the ability to select planets, stars, and even satellites and then view information on them is impressive. The only negatives that I had about this product were the assembly manual and the location of the thumb screws on the legs. The assembly manual was very confusing and the order of the images to the instructions were difficult to follow due to instructions being on different pages than the images. The thumbscrews on the legs are located at the bottom of each leg. This makes it difficult to setup the telescope stand due to having to extend yourself to tighten the screws when the legs are fully extended. Overall this is a great beginner / moderate user telescope.

This is my first telescope and I was excited to be able to recognize Jupiter and three moons without the help of the enclosed DVD. Who knows what I might find using a map. I don't know how to compare this scope to others but I am very satisfied with this one and recommend it to anyone. You should add a moon filter and carry bag to your order.

Bought this scope for an experiment.Orion is modest in telling you what this scope can see. We looked at many star clusters and pushed it slightly past the 140x magnification maximum advertised on a good night and still got very sharp images. I intend to use this scope to do the entire double star program from the Astronomical League.

I had gotten this product and it is amazing. The finderscope is easy to use. And when you foucus it on an object it gives beautiful crystall clear images. A must have for the beginner astronmer. The only down side is that the assembly is a little confusing but once you see how everything goes together it's a snap. I love it and anyone who wants a good telescope should get this.
