Orion Premium 102mm f/7 ED Refractor Telescope

I first purchased the 102mm Premium Refractor about 8 months ago and the scope has really grown on me. It is now the only scope that I use for astrophotography. I am a DSLR imager and have had great success with the combination of my Canon XT and XSi and thias scope. I have recently purchased a, Astro-Tech field flattener which, in combination with this scope has produced the best images I have done yet. I would highly recommend this scope to the price conscious astronomer/astrophotographer that wants an excellent ED scope for a little bit of money.

This is a great buy. The optics have an excellent figure and deliver sharp views with no false color. Every bit as good as the Tak FS102 I owned about a year ago. You will not be disappointed with this one at all.

I have owned my F/7 ED refractor for the best part of a year now, which I use mostly for astrophotography. I agree with most of the positive comments in the other reviews, though I have a couple of minor reservations. The rotatable focuser is useful indeed, but I find the lock knob to be too close to the focuser housing. If it were just a bit longer, or placed further back, you'd be able to fit your fingers all the way around. As it is I have to tighten it with several of small turns. I am also not sure if the draw tube lock knob is supposed to actually lock the tube. It certainly does not on mine, it just offers a little resistance against moving the tube. In practice this hasn't caused me any trouble with maintaining focus. Otherwise, an all round good solid refractor.

Right out of the box you can tell this is a "special" instrument. The look and the feel is that of a "High End Refractor". Visually it is even better. I had to work with a full moon my first night out. I could not see any fringe color. Turning to a few bright stars for more false color testing I had the same result. You will have to look hard to see any. Next Castor made for a very easy clean split. Even under a full moon I could tell that I will be in for many great nights under the stars with this instrument. Great job Orion! Jim Hannon

I recently purchased the Premium 102mm F/7 ED Refractor for visual and photographic purposes. Every piece of the OTA is well made and smoothly operating. The dual speed focuser has a smooth feel and fine adjust. The rotating ring will help a lot when aligning photos when polar mounted. The optics are clear and sharp. This may be the finest product I have purchased from Orion and is well worth the money. It is a beautiful instrument.

I am very pleased with the Orion 102mm ED, both mechanically and optically. No color was noted, even on a moon with normal viewing. I could force a faint violet fringe only by placing the limb near the edge of the FOV and looking across the eye lens from the opposite side but this may have been the eyepiece as well. The 2", microfocus crayford type rotating focuser is graduated which is a help with imaging. Even the 2" to 1-1/4" adapter has 2" filter threads. I have used this scope for a month to image and it is a pleasure to use. For visual use, make sure to have a diagonal and/or eyepiece extensions. I found that in general, these were required to achieve focus even with the focuser racked out the full 8+ cm. Fit and finish are excellent. Complaints, if you could call them that: Paint at the focuser end of the tube did not completely cover the edge (very minor cosmetic issue). Dew shield when extended is loose and can wobble slightly. There was a piece of debris on the inner lens surface that was easily removed with padded lens cloth an a dowel.

I am not sure that the Orion Premium 102mm F/7 ED Refractor can quite rise to the level of color free viewing that the Orion 80mm ED or 100mm F/9 ED refractors have treated us to but it's very good nonetheless. And when the overall package is included in the evaluation - size, overall build quality, dual speed focuser, built in sliding shade and included mounting rings/dovetail - the value here really is amazing in the marketplace. I have produced stunning images of the Moon using my DSLR and I look forward to more imaging with the telescope. In my view not just a solid value but a very good value indeed. M. Olson Tucson, AZ

Optics seem as good as my Orion ED80, but with much nicer mechanicals. Rotating two-stage focuser and retracting lens shade are especially slick. Star test looked great, with textbook diffraction rings and no obvious color on bright stars. Hasty test images with my DSLR showed sharp round stars over most of the frame, but with a little elongation of stars in the corners that I expect to be able to fix with a field flattener. Smaller CCD chips should be good full-frame without a flattener. Minor irritations included a few paint runs, adhesive residue on front edge of dew shield, small piece of EPS foam inside tube near objective, white substance (paint overspray?) on bottom of 1.25 inch eyepiece adapter, slight hesitation in portions of focuser travel (apparently from uneven distribution of sticky grease ¿ improved with use), slight wobble in fine focus knob (probably just attached crooked), and flat black paint on inside of tube that doesn¿t seem as flat as I¿d like. But these all cosmetic and/or easily fixed. The things that really matter are great. In particular, optics are as good as I had hoped and the focuser is a beauty. Additional notes: dew shield retracts and extends smoothly; dust cap is metal and fits well; weight with included tube rings and dovetail is just over 10 lbs; the millimeter scale on the focuser tube is very handy; and a 2 inch eyepiece extension tube is very useful, since this thing has lots of in-focus (my DSLR had to be racked out to 45mm of the available 85mm focus travel even with an Orion extension tube in place). In short, I have too many good scopes and too few mounts ¿ but this scope will spend a lot of time on my best mount.
