Orion ShortTube 80-A Refractor Telescope
Reviewer: Dr. Bernard D. Sokolowski
As a lecturer who teaches beginning
Amateur Astronomers how to evaluate
and pick a first telescope, I'm always
looking for equipment that acceptably
fills this need.
I owned an original ST80 when they first
came out nearly a decade ago. They
were quite good back then. But were still
quite unrefined with plenty of violet halo
at powers over 75x and pretty shaky
focusers that needed a bit of tweeking.
However it was still a good widefield
scope for the money and could be
classified a very good beginners scope
even then.
Like all things, advances in technology
and pressures of the free market cause
even beginner telescopes to evolve. The
ST80 is no exception. This most recent
model ST80 blows the original out of the
water! Solid focuser with no backlash or
wobble, deep green multicoating with
hardly a reflection to see. Excellent
spherical correction with excellent optical
collimation right out of the box.
I've owned over 130 scopes in my day,
including all types of refractors from APs
to Taks to the Chinese made Vixen
clones. All I can say is that this Orion
ST80 is not only well made, with solid
mechanics and excellent optics, but also
performs well when compared side by
side with our clubs Vixen 81ED
Apochromatic Refractor. Sure the ST80
is only an achromate and exhibits the
false color (chromatic abberation) you'd
expect, but, I must say, it is very well
controlled and only a 1/4 as bad as the
original.
I've been able to push the ST80 to 160x
with very good results. Lunar color
fringing is very minor, even when full,
with surprising littlle of the violet spill
over that is often seen with most Short
tubes of the past. Detail is stunning!
Planetary detail on Jupiter so very close
to the Vixen ED81, and nearly identical
to it when using a Baader Fringe Killer
coupled to a Moon and SkyGlow filter.
To say the ST80 is a good deal is like
saying the Eiffel Tower is a TV antenna!!!
The NEW ST80 (at least this sample), in
this reviewers opinion, is one of the best
buys of all time!!! Good job Orion, you
hit a Grand Slam with this one...
Respectfully Yours,

The optics appear near perfect when I
used some of my better eyepieces. Only
had one good night of viewing but got
great views of Orion's nebulas, Pleadies,
and Andromeda. I've been in the hobby
for about ten years and have other
larger scopes (10" Dob, 8 SN) which I
now seldom use because of the set up
required. That's why I bought the Short
Tube and don't regret it!

I use this scope as a guide scope and a
travel scope. Its compact size makes it
easy to take along on vacation. It
mounts easily to an ordinary camera
tripod, and it provides some decent
views of a variety of celestial objects.

I am currently using the Short Tube 80
mm Refractor for both terrestial imaging
and astrophotography. I have only had
this tube for a few days but I am very
pleased with it. The daytime terrestial
images are very clean and sharp with no
sign of shadow or blue edges around the
subject. I have several images of a
Rufus Humming Bird that I took this
afternoon and the camera I use is a
Canon EOS 450D at prime focus. It is the
best small portable scope around and for
the money it is great value. Thank You Orion

This my first REAL telescope. I have
been using a cheap department store
telescope that basically just let me see
the moon, so I didn't really know what to
expect from the Sort Tube 80-A
telescope. To say that I was very
surprised with what I could see is putting
it very mildly. With Jupiter and Venus
approaching their conjunction and
observing the Pleiades (M45) star cluster
I have enjoyed hours of star gazing and
only covered a very small area .
The Short Tube 80-A is (for the money
paid) a fantastic little starter scope that
allows you to see an extarodinary amount
of the sky. The only thing that
disappointed me is that I didn't buy one
years ago.

Purchased as a gift to send overseas to
a remote area. Overall a good starter
telescope. I chose a refractor over other
types because I was afraid mirrors might
break in transit and I did not want the
novice user to be concerned with
collimation.
The assembly instructions could have
been clearer for the beginner. Overall it
was fairly easy to assemble except when
removing the protective cap from the
focuser assembly. The cap was jammed
when I received it. In pulling it out the
3x10 mm piece of plastic that applied
pressure to the focusing wheel came out.
It took me 20 minutes to put it back in.
Redesign this feature! Remember this is
a beginners telescope so it must be
rugged.
I aligned the finder scope with the OTA
during daylight. At night I only had to
make minor adjustments.
I was impressed with the 9 and 20 mm
eyepieces. When I compared the views
thru these two eyepieces with my $200
eyepieces that I use with my 12-inch
Dob I found the views to be quite good.
The cloud bands of Jupiter at 9 mm were
clear with excellent FOV.
I used a Barlow Lens with the 9 mm with
good results. Using a 4 mm Zhumell
pushed the scope to its limit

The Short Tube 80 is of good quality
telescope. It is well built, solid and fun
to use. With the 80mm lens you get nice
views of the moon, some planets, and
some deep sky objects, but keep in mind
a larger scope like the XT10, or even the
XT8 will give you better views of deep
sky objects. The short 400mm focal
length gives you a nice wide field of
view. One nice deep sky object to view
is the Double Cluster. Also, check out
the Pleiades open cluster, it looks nice
through the Short Tube 80. I only wish
Orion offered it with a better mount. I
purchased it without a mount due to that
fact, but I already have a mount so it
worked out for me. Of course, I have
never used the EQ1 or EQ2 mounts, but
with 10 yrs of astronomy experience, it
just looks too small and unstable to me,
but I have never tried it so I can't say
for sure. Over all the Short Tube 80 is
an excellent telescope to use. I would
recommend it to anyone, and will take it
to my astronomy club star parties to use
and show off to my friends what a small,
light weight, well built, inexpensive
telescope it is. Great Buy!

I seem to be an Orion fan. My latest
purchase is the ShortTube 80. The fit
and finish of my scope are excellent.
The optics are clear and bright and the
focuser seems to have no backlash. The
accessories that come with this telescope
are high quality and will serve you well.
I use this scope on an HXD tripod with a
Precision Slow-Motion Adapter and have
an EQ-1 mount coming because the
scope is capable of more power than I
can use on a camera tripod. In the
current configuration, I can be outside
and set up in less than five minutes -
charts, flashlight, scope and all. For
casual observing, this is another great
value from Orion and one that you
cannot afford to miss. I really enjoy
mine.

Great finder scope. Focal length is too
short for most deep sky objects and
planetary optical viewing.

I bought the 80 short tube because I
wanted a wide low power field of view
with interchangable eyepieces for
sweeping the sky. Also works great as a
guideing scope for my larger telescopes
and an excellent imaging scope I get
stars to 15 mag with a DLSR camera with
only a 2 min exposure. Last night using
an orion broadband filter in LP skies I
was able to image the horsehead nebulae
with a 5 minute exposure. The faster
imaging system works excellent for
those of us who want to dip our toes in
imaging and not have a rock solid
mount . An excellent and very versatile
telescope.

i bought this as a super finder and wide
field telescope for my 12inch dob. Works
great. Some ca, but as i use it at
less then 60x, hardly noticeable. Very
nice wide field views of the double
cluster, moon, comets etc. But did end
up replacing the 20mm eyepiece with one
of better quality for low power viewing,
and the dew shield is to short. But
still, a very good bargain for the money.
