Orion ShortTube 80-T Refractor Telescope
  • This popular wide-field refractor is now even better! Take it anywhere for hours of enjoyment.
  • Multi-coated 80mm lens and short 400mm focal length give you bright and crisp wide-field vistas.
  • Perfect for stargazing or terrestrial viewing
  • Includes two eyepieces, cast-aluminum focuser, and correct-image diagonal (1.25").
  • One-year limited warranty

The popular "little telescope that could" is now even better. The wide-field refractor that novices appreciate for its ease of use and big-scope owners value as a take-anywhere second scope now has fully multi-coated optics and comes with its own padded carrying case.

Its 80mm achromatic objective lens, short tube 400mm focal length (f/5.0), correct-image diagonal (1.25") and 6x26 correct-image finder telescope make the ST80-T perfect for casual stargazing or terrestrial viewing. The short focal length means you'll see a beautifully wide field of view. And like all refractor telescopes, the unobstructed light path means sharper images with better definition and contrast.

Despite its diminutive size — it's only 15-1/2" long — this telescope delivers the goods. And it's so portable you will be able to take it virtually anywhere.

It comes equipped with a 1.25" cast-aluminum rack-and-pinion focuser and two interchangeable Sirius Plossl telescope eyepieces — 25mm (16x) and 10mm (40x). Easily attaches to Orion equatorial mounts or photo tripods. One-year limited warranty.

Please note this product was not designed or intended by the manufacturer for use by a child 12 years of age or younger.

No real complaints. Good scope for wide views. I put a two speed 2 inch focuser on it for photography. Also makes a good guide scope with SSAG. I will use this scope by it'self or mounted on others. The soft bag sucks. Mine fell apart in less than 1 year. Replaced it with the hard case. Not necessarily a good first scope but complements a SCT if you have one like I do. William

To sum it up the ST-80 T is a great scope. I purchased it for astronomical use as a guide scope but after seeing the views it provided I plan to use it as an imaging scope as well. The only difficulty I found was mounting it on top of my other scope. I couldn't find a dovetail that worked so I made my own. I recommend this scope!

I was looking at this as an ultra-portable astronomy and nature scope. The optics are quite good if you don't push the magnification too high (which you won't with the supplied Plossls). I won't dwell too long on daytime viewing with the correct-image prism diagonal, except to say I was quite pleased. At night, I pushed it to about 80x with other eyepieces and a barlow on the moon with good results there is some false color on bright objects but WAY less than I had expected certainly not enough to bother me at this price. On Jupiter, not much detail could be resolved other than the Galilean moons and northern and southern bands - but that's still good for a tiny scope such as this. This scope is wonderful for bright open clusters and sweeping star fields (something my best planetary scope cannot do well). The stars at the edge of the field are not as sharp as those in the center, but that's not a surprise at F5 (and at this price). The focuser is a bit stiff and does have some image shift which bothered me at first but a good focuser costs more than I spent on the whole package. If money were no object, I would buy a TMB 92mm F5.5 but this package cost 1/10th the price of that scope! I am planning to take this with me to the Caribbean with a Paragon-Plus XHD tripod for casual viewing, day and night. Four stars out of five only because of the focuser.

As a novice, I find the ST-80 to be well constructed, easy to use, extremely convenient, quick to set up and provides excellent terrestrial and astronomical views within the capabilities of its magnification.

I purchased this mainly for a "Travel Scope" with the aluminum case and tabletop EQ tripod mount. This is a very nice scope! I can see how it could easily be used as a main scope as well. Clear Optics with beautiful views! Well done Orion!!! Again!!! :)

Excellent scope, quick and easy to use provides great views. Its no Hubble but it takes you were you want to go. HOWEVER invest in a good high power eyepiece to get this little guy to live up to its full potential.

You can't see much w/ the included eyepiece (25mm and 10mm) but if you buy the 3.5mm Orion Stratus 68 degree field of view, you can see the rings of saturn. The difference between this T refractor is that i comes w/ a prism that makes things right side up and oriented so that you can read street sign. (with the 80 A refractor the street sign you see will be backward) The negative things about this 45 degree prism is that looking straight up into the sky will be a little difficult due to 45 degree angle of the eyepiece lens pointing down (when the telescope points directly up) So i have to buy the 90 diagonal to make the viewing a little more comfortable on the neck. Having the Orion Mini EQ mount will complement this grab and go telescope great deal. I haven't had time to go check out the andromena galaxy or the sombrero galaxy yet. But if i can see the rings of saturn, i am sure i can see the galaxies too since they are a little bigger. Yes i know that the additional 3.5mm cost 100 dollars, but it is worth it. When you buy an eyepiece you are not wasting your money because it will work w/ any telescope you have for future use.

A fun, portable terrestrial scope. However, when you use it for astronomy it is very limited by its short vocal length (400mm). The manufacturers love to label these super short focal length scopes "rich field". Only the biggest deep sky objects can be found and the planets don't look very good because you can't get close enough with good resolution. I would suggest a larger reflector for a much better beginner scope.
