I've had the Orion ShortTube 80 for almost two months. I had time to test and work with the scope, I primarily use the scope as part of my guiding and also for wider angle pictures. I have good comments: - the quality of the materials seem relatively good and will able to stand the demands of the outdoors. - the lenses and weight of the lenses makes ideal for a guiding scope. - it was easy to attach my DSLR camera and take a good picture of Orion Nebula. - The price of the scope it's a plus and easy on the budget.

Dollar for dollar the 80mm is the best value in guidescopes and not a bad little travel scope for general use. Availability of good, inexpensive rings and mounting rail a real plus.

No, this is not the perfect 80mm. But, it deserves 5 stars for the money. This little guy is light, compact and a good performer. I use this scope for imaging (not guiding!), white light solar viewing, daytime viewing and as a quick look scope at night. It is a great value for any astronomer on a budget.

I am extremely happy with my purchase of the Short Tube 80 scope I purchased. I bought it for video-taping occultations, and it serves my purpose well.

I bought the 80mm short tube for autoguiding my Losmandy G-11,but I also bought a SSAG to use with it ,but I cant extend the SSAG more than ten feet,so I cant use it without a Laptop that uses Win XP. Iam trying to buy a newer Laptop so I can use it outdoors. The monsoon season in NM is over so I might get my autoguiding working soon. The Shortube is ontop of my AT102ED by rings and seems stable enough. The focus lock seems to work ok,if I remember to tighten it.

I purchased the Short Tube 80 for use as a guidescope for CCD imaging. I have only had the opportunity to use the Short Tube on two nights but it appears to be a very capable guidescope. It is light, compact and has a sturdy focuser. A 1.25 inch extension tube is required to reach focus with the SBIG ST-402 CCD camera that I am using as the guide camera. I expect to get many years of service from the Short Tube and would recommend it to potential buyers.

I purchased this little scope to replase my 9x50mm finder scope that came with my 8" SCT. I use it in conjunction with the Orion AutoGuider and it performs very well. This little scope gives you a lot of bang for the buck. I was so impressed with this scope I have used it as a stand alone refractor. The performance is excellent. Anyone who is looking for a good light weight guide scope, the 80-A is fantastic and as an additional bonus gives you a second scope to use by itself. I would highly recommend this product. It out performs refractors costing much more. If you are going to use this only as a guide scope, I would recommend you get the complete kit. It's only a few bucks more and will allow you to enjoy this as a stand alone second scope. Good work Orion! Another excellent product!

I purchased this scope as a low cost guidescope for my Orion 102mm ED and Orion StarShoot autoguider. In this capacity it completely meets my expectations and I would rate it 5 stars as a budget, light weight guidescope. I will probably never use it visually or as a grab and go scope but for the money, it cannot be beat. It did not have enough focus travel for most of my eyepieces or the autoguider without using a diagonal or extension. Obvious cost measures are the plastic lens cell, basic rack and pinion focuser and plastic focuser knobs (which I replaced with Orions metal knobs). It is still a clean scope and complements my 102mm ED and is a great value for its price.
