How to measure your binocular

Determining the Correct Orion Solar Filter for your Binocular
A full-aperture solar filter is designed to fit over the front of a binocular. It allows safe viewing of the Sun by reducing the light by 99.99% and preventing concentrated heat from entering the binocular lenses, which could cause injury to the user or damage to equipment.

If your binocular is not listed on our solar filter chart, you can determine the size of filter needed for your binocular lenses by taking the following steps:

Measure the maximum outside diameter (OD) of the front end of your binocular.

The solar filter sizes listed on our website refer to the inner diameter (ID) of the filter's foam-lined metal cell for Orion Safety Film Solar Filters, which slip over the front of the binocular. Choose a filter whose size matches the OD of your binocular's front end, or that is up to 0.25 inches larger than the front end.

Installing the Orion Solar Filter on Your Binocular
If your solar filter includes three thumbscrews, back them out to just inside the wall of the metal cell. Alternatively, if your filter includes foam shims, you can install them now to ensure a snug fit. Then place the solar filter over the outside of the binocular. It may require some light force to push the filter into place, but make sure it is seated completely over the binocular. Then lightly tighten the thumbscrews (if included) to further secure the filter on the binocular.

These budget-friendly solar filters feature a strong film polymer material that is more durable than other thin film solar filters. Once installed on 50mm binoculars, these E-Series Solar Filters display the Sun in a pleasing, natural yellow-orange color unlike the unnatural blue shade cast by some other types of filters. The yellow-orange image of the Sun yields high levels of contrast and clarity for sharp solar views.

The lightweight, yet ridged cardboard housing of these solar filters feature an inside diameter (ID) of 2.54", which means they fit binoculars whose objective lens barrels have an outer diameter between 2.38"-2.5" (60.3mm-63.5mm).

These E-Series Solar Filters are designed to fit a range of 50mm binoculars. Since binocular dimensions may vary, we include adhesive-backed felt strips which are required to provide a secure friction-fit between the solar filters and binocular barrels. Some binocular models may require a double layer of felt strips to achieve a friction-fit with the filters.

CAUTION: Before observing the Sun, confirm the E-Series Solar Filters are securely installed on binoculars. NEVER look at the Sun, even for an instant, without a protective solar filter.
