Whoever coined the phrase "big things come in small packages", would have definitely applied that expression to our new StarMax 90 TableTop Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope. This ultra-compact Mak-Cass gives surprisingly big views for an instrument of its modest size, making it an elegant first telescope or a great grab-and-go second telescope!
The long, 1250mm (f/13.8) focal length gives the StarMax 90 TableTop some serious magnifying power - the included 25mm and 10mm 1.25" Super 3-element eyepieces yield powers of 50x and 125x, respectively. It collects over 25% more light than its GoScope 80 cousin, and up to 225% more light than a 60mm refractor telescope. So you'll be able to enjoy planetary delights such as lunar landscapes, Saturn's rings and Jupiter's moons. As you scan the Milky Way, you'll also be able to pull in some open and globular star clusters, as well as a nebula or two.
The tube assembly of the StarMax 90mm TableTop Telescope is attached to a stable swivel base, via a quick-release dovetail mount with adjustable altitude tension. The tube can easily be removed from the base and mounted on an optional photo tripod. The small swivel base itself can also be mounted on a camera tripod with a 3/8" screw.
A red-dot view finder, internal focuser (which moves the primary lens back and forth) and included 90° star diagonal round out the features of this compact, yet surprisingly capable, Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope.
One of the most interesting and rewarding aspects of amateur astronomy is the ability to view the heavens at different magnifications. Viewing magnification is calculated by taking the telescope's focal length and dividing it by the focal length of the eyepiece you are using. For example, using a 20mm eyepiece in a telescope with a 1200mm focal length yields a viewing magnification of 60-power (1200 divided by 20 equals 60). If you were to remove the 20mm eyepiece and replace with a 10mm model, your viewing magnification would be boosted to 120-power (1200 divided by 10 equals 120). While effective, this method of altering magnification can at times be a bit of a hassle since interchanging eyepieces must be done rather quickly in order to keep the object you're viewing centered in the eyepiece field-of-view, and in some cases focus adjustments must be made for different eyepieces. In some unfortunate cases, you may not have the ideal focal length eyepiece for viewing an object at the ideal magnification.
The Orion Add Make It Zoom! Kit provides elegant alternatives to using fixed focal length eyepieces. The Included Orion Zooom! Eyepiece has an adjustable focal length range of 7.2mm to 21.5mm, so you can alter the magnification of your view without removing the eyepiece from the focuser. Additionally, we also include our popular and versatile Orion Shorty 2x Barlow Lens, which doubles the effective magnification of any eyepiece used with it. With their powers combined (no pun intended), these handy accessories furnish a wide variety of viewing magnifications. For example, the 7.2mm-21.5mm Zooom! eyepiece used in a 1200mm focal length telescope provides a magnification range of 166.7-power (at 7.2mm setting) to 55.8-power (at 21.5mm setting). By inserting the Zooom! eyepiece into the Orion Shorty 2x Barlow, the magnification range becomes 333.3-power (at 7.2mm setting) to 111.6-power. Hours of enjoyment await once you have a magnification range of this amount at your disposal.
Rounding out the Add Make It Zoom! Kit is the Orion Beginning Stargazers Toolkit which includes the following four items designed to help astronomers find their way around the heavens.
The included Orion MoonMap 260 is a useful reference map of the Moon's surface that will help the whole family learn the names and locations of more than 260 craters, mountains, valleys, "seas" and other interesting lunar features you can explore with your telescope. Use the MoonMap 260 to identify craters you've observed, or use it before you go out with a telescope to plan a night full of Moon-watching family fun.
