Sharing with Friends

My story on how we celebrated the night sky begins with having friends of ours over for a casual dinner and letting the kids play. Since the kids are young, we usually end parties fairly early, but this one lasted well into the evening. It was a fortunate event as it allowed time for the moon to rise in its full glory high overhead, with clear skies. I immediately went to my bedroom and grabbed my 3in Cometron reflector that I have spent many hours behind since it was given to me during the passing of Halley’s Comet. It only took a few minutes for the kids to gather around and ask what I was doing. I couldn’t believe that our friends had never had a chance to look through a telescope before. I quickly located and focused on the moon. I spent the next 2 hours manually tracking the moon as our friends 3 boys, my daughter, and our friends took turns looking at the moon. Now my daughter and I have spent many nights looking at the moon, or Jupiter when it is visible, but this night sticks out as it was the first time I had introduced anybody new to the hobby of astronomy, much less introducing 5 people to the hobby! I only wish I had a larger scope so I could have shown them Saturn or some nebula! As a result of that night our friends are looking into getting their own telescope (they even trying to buy mine off of me!), after they move half a world away to Copenhagen where they will continue to spread the joy of such a wonderful hobby.
