    This image of the 2012 Venus Transit shows the "Black Drop Effect," where the shadow of the planet appears to extend out to the limb of the Sun in a teardrop shape. During a solar transit the bright light of the Sun slightly engulfs Venus, making the planet appear smaller than it is. But at the outermost edge of the Sun, the light does not engulf the planet, resulting in the Black Drop Effect.
