Learn More About the EON 80 mm ED Refractor

Is the EON 80 mm ED Doublet Refractor Right for You?

The Orion EON 80 mm ED Doublet Refractor is a portable telescope designed to support the needs of both astrophotographers and visual observers. If you are looking for a beginner and budget-friendly refractor that delivers sharp views of our Moon, while also providing the optical performance needed to capture stunning astrophotos, this refractor is a great match for you. It is not a great option for anyone looking to capture photos of the planets or observe dim, deep-sky objects under light-polluted skies.

What You'll See and Why It Works

With the EON 80 mm ED Doublet Refractor, you will enjoy incredible views of our Moon, as well as bright deep sky objects, such as the Orion Nebula (M42) and the Andromeda Galaxy (M31). The f/7 focal ratio helps provide sharp views with less chromatic aberration, which is further reduced by the doublet optical design and extra-low dispersion "ED" glass. If you want to use this refractor for astrophotography, the optional 0.8x reducer for the EON 80 mm refractor (sold separately) is a great accessory upgrade that significantly improves the quality of your astrophotos by reducing the focal length of the telescope, while widening and flattening the field of view.

What You Should Know Before You Buy

Is the EON 80 mm good for beginners?

Yes. Thanks to the straightforward, portable, and low-maintenance design, the EON 80 mm is an excellent refractor for beginners.

Does the EON 80 mm find objects automatically?

No. The EON 80 mm does not include a telescope mount. In order to automatically track objects, you'll need to attach the optical tube to a computerized alt-azimuth or equatorial mount.

Can I take pictures with it?

Yes! The EON 80 mm is designed for both visual and astrophotography use. For quick photos or videos of the Moon and bright objects, a simple smartphone adapter is all you need to start capturing the cosmos. If you want to capture long-exposure, deep-sky astrophotos, you'll need a dedicated astronomy camera or digital camera, as well as a computerized mount that automatically tracks the night sky.

What comes with the telescope?

The EON 80 mm comes with (2x) tube rings and a dovetail bar, which are pre-installed on the optical tube at the factory. It also comes with a 2" to 1.25" eyepiece adapter, front and rear dust covers, and a soft padded case.

Is it portable?

The EON 80 mm is an incredibly portable telescope, weighing in at just 6 lbs. When the dew shield is fully extended, the optical tube measures 21" in length. When retracted, the length is 16", making this refractor incredibly easy to transport. It also comes with a soft padded carry case for extra protection when on the move!

What should I buy with it first?

The most useful first upgrades are a 2x Barlow lens, a higher-power eyepiece, a Moon filter, and a smartphone adapter. For those interested in serious long-exposure astrophotography, the dedicated 0.8x Reducer for the EON 80 mm is a must-have accessory that significantly improves the quality of your astrophotos by expanding and flattening the field of view.
