Learn More About the SkyQuest XT8 Dobsonian

Is the Orion XT8 Right for You?

The Orion SkyQuest XT8 Classic Dobsonian is a strong first serious telescope for beginners, families, and backyard observers who want bright visual views of the Moon, planets, star clusters, and brighter deep-sky objects. It is fully manual, so it does not require batteries, apps, or computerized alignment, but it also does not automatically find or track objects. This is the right telescope if you want to learn the sky yourself and enjoy a simple “point and view” observing experience. It is not the right choice if you want GoTo object locating, motorized tracking, or a telescope built primarily for long-exposure astrophotography. Although with the addition of a smartphone adapter, you can take beautiful images of the moon and the planets with relative ease.

What You’ll See and Why It Works

The XT8 is built for visual astronomy. Its 8" parabolic primary mirror collects 78% more light than a 6" reflector telescope, so you can observe Jupiter, Saturn, brighter star clusters, bright nebulae, and some galaxies like Andromeda. What makes the XT8 work well is the combination of a 200 mm parabolic primary mirror, 1200 mm focal length, and f/6 focal ratio. In plain English, that means it has enough light-gathering power for bright views, enough focal length to perform well on the Moon and planets, and a forgiving optical design that is easy for beginners to learn and master.

The fully manual Dobsonian base is also a major part of the experience. You move the telescope up/down and left/right by hand, which makes it simple and intuitive, especially for new observers. There is no app, battery, alignment routine, or hand controller to learn before you start observing.

What You Should Know Before You Buy

Is the Orion XT8 good for beginners?

Yes. The XT8 is a strong beginner telescope because it is simple, manual, and powerful enough to show bright views of the Moon, planets, and brighter deep-sky objects.

Does the Orion XT8 find objects automatically?

No. The XT8 is fully manual. You point it yourself using the Dobsonian base and red dot finder.

Does it track objects?

No. It does not track automatically. As Earth rotates, objects will drift through the eyepiece, and you manually nudge the telescope to keep them in view.

Can I take pictures with it?

Yes! However, you will need a smartphone adapter, which will let you take quick photos or videos of the Moon and bright planets. The XT8 is not designed for serious long-exposure deep-sky astrophotography.

What comes with the telescope?

It includes the XT8 telescope, a 25 mm 1.25" Plossl eyepiece, a 1.25" to 2" eyepiece adapter, a red dot reflex finder, a dust cap, and the Dobsonian base.

Is it portable?

It is movable, but not compact. The telescope weighs 55.6 lbs. total, with the optical tube listed at 27.2 lbs. and the base at 28.4 lbs. Most people will find it easier to move in two pieces, with the base first, then attaching the optical tube to the base.

What should I buy with it first?

The most useful first upgrades are a 2x Barlow lens, a higher-power eyepiece, a Moon filter, and a smartphone adapter.

What’s Included and What to Add Later

  • Orion SkyQuest XT8 Classic Dobsonian Telescope: The main telescope and manual Dobsonian base
  • 25 mm 1.25" Plossl eyepiece:  A Starter eyepiece that provides 48x magnification
  • 1.25" to 2" eyepiece adapter: This Lets you use 1.25" eyepieces in the 2" focuser
  • Red dot reflex finder: Which helps you aim the telescope
  • Dust cap: Helping protect the telescope when stored

Good first upgrades would be a 2x Barlow lens, a higher-power planetary eyepiece, a Moon filter, and a smartphone adapter. The Barlow or higher-power eyepiece helps with the Moon and planets, while a smartphone adapter makes it easier to take simple photos or videos through the eyepiece.

Setup, Care, and Support

The XT8 arrives in two boxes: one for the optical tube and one for the base. The base does require assembly, and detailed instructions on how to assemble can be downloaded below. The XT8 is a reflector telescope, so it will occasionally need collimation, which means aligning the mirrors for the best image. This is a straightforward process, and we've provided step-by-step instructions on how to collimate your telescope for the best result in the manual. When not in use, store the telescope with the dust cap on, avoid touching the mirrors, and keep it dry.

Pro Tip: If you observe in cold weather, give the telescope time to adjust to the outdoor temperature before expecting the sharpest views.
