Learn More About the SpaceProbe 130ST EQ Reflector

Is the SpaceProbe 130ST EQ Reflector Right for You?

The SpaceProbe 130ST Short Tube EQ Reflector is ideal for aspiring astronomers and night sky enthusiasts seeking a powerful, reflector-based telescope system equipped with a smooth equatorial mount. Featuring a large optical tube with a 130 mm (5.1") aperture, this telescope provides sharp views of our Moon, as well as brighter deep-sky targets and star clusters. This refractor is not designed for astrophotography, although the EQ-2 mount does allow accurate manual tracking of the night sky. So, with a simple smartphone adapter (sold separately), you can easily capture quick photos and videos of your observations. It's not designed to observe dim deep-sky targets under heavily light-polluted skies, and the 650 mm focal length does not provide enough magnification to resolve much surface detail on the planets. However, it can resolve Jupiter along with its four brightest moons, as well as Saturn and its rings.

What You'll See and Why It Works.

The SpaceProbe 130ST Short Tube EQ Reflector comes complete with a classic equatorial mount with two slow-motion controls and a lightweight aluminum tripod with an eyepiece accessory tray. What makes this telescope work well is the combination of a 130 mm parabolic primary mirror, 650 mm focal length, and a fast f/5 focal ratio. The kit includes two Sirius Plossl eyepieces (32 mm and 12.5 mm), which are well-suited for exploring bright, wide-field targets, such as the Orion Nebula (M42), the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), and the Hercules Globular Cluster (M13). It also provides striking views of the lunar surface. The included red dot finder makes it easy to locate targets. Copies of Orion’s MoonMap 260 and DeepMap 600 are included to further assist your observations.

What You Should Know Before You Buy

Is the SpaceProbe 130ST Short Tube EQ Reflector good for beginners?

Yes. The SpaceProbe 130ST Short Tube EQ Reflector is a strong beginner telescope because it is simple, manual, and powerful enough to show bright views of the Moon, planets, and brighter deep-sky objects.

Does the SpaceProbe 130ST Short Tube EQ Reflector find objects automatically?

No. The SpaceProbe 130ST Short Tube EQ Reflector is fully manual. You point it yourself using the classic equatorial mount base and red dot finder.

Does it track objects?

No. It does not track automatically. As Earth rotates, objects will drift through the eyepiece, and you manually nudge the telescope to keep them in view.

Can I take pictures with it?

Yes! With the included EZ Smartphone adapter, you'll be able to take quick photos or videos of your observations. However, the SpaceProbe 130ST Short Tube EQ Reflector is not designed for serious long-exposure deep-sky astrophotography, which often requires a computerized mount that automatically tracks the night sky.

What comes with the telescope?

The SpaceProbe 130ST Short Tube EQ Reflector kit includes a 32mm and 12.5mm 1.25" Sirius Plossl eyepiece, a red-dot finder, a robust classic equatorial mount, a durable aluminum tripod, a collimation cap, and an 1.25" Moon filter. It also comes with copies of Moon Map 260 and DeepMap 600 to further support your explorations of the night sky.

Is it portable?

The SpaceProbe 130ST Short Tube EQ Reflector is a durable telescope designed for those looking to learn more about advanced observation techniques. While it is relatively portable, the classic EQ mount includes a counterweight, aluminum tripod, and an equatorial mount head crafted from steel components. It's a great backyard setup, and can be easily disassembled for transport to remote observing sites.

What should I buy with it first?

The most useful first upgrades are a 2x Barlow lens and a laser collimator. A 2x Barlow doubles the magnification of your eyepieces, allowing you to get a closer view of your targets. A laser collimator will help you maintain the alignment of the primary and secondary mirrors.

Setup, Care, and Support

The SpaceProbe 130ST Short Tube EQ Reflector Telescope mount does require assembly, and detailed instructions on how to assemble are found in the user manual.

The SpaceProbe 130ST Short Tube EQ Reflector Telescope requires occasional collimation, which means aligning the mirrors for the best image performance. This is a straightforward process, and we've provided step-by-step instructions on how to collimate your telescope for the best result in the manual. When not in use, store the telescope with the dust cap on, avoid touching the mirrors, and keep it dry.

Pro Tip: If you observe in cold weather, give the telescope time to adjust to the outdoor temperature before expecting the sharpest views.
