The crosshairs in standard finder scopes are difficult to see in the dark, which makes centering an object something of a guessing game. Well, we saw the light, and we now offer this finder scope with illuminated crosshairs, the Orion 9x50 Illuminated Finder Scope with Bracket. An adjustable-intensity red LED in the illuminator arm lights an etched-glass double crosshair reticle, making it as easy as target practice to center your viewing or photo subject or guide star. Centering an object precisely on the finder scope's crosshairs will ensure that it appears in your main telescope's eyepiece or on your camera's charge coupled device (CCD) chip, exactly where you want it.

I recently mounted this on an Orion 120mm f/8.3 refractor. It offers sharp, wide views and is easily adjusted. It's held the intitial settings without drifting at all. In all aspects, the finder appears well-made and the lighted reticle is certainly a step up from a standard finder.

This is a great finder, with optical quality good enough for wide-field observing by itself. You will very likely need to add counterweight to compensate for this monster. My only nitpick is that the LED illumination could start out a bit dimmer, as it can drown out even fairly bright stars near the crosshairs. The action on the dimmer is great, though, so I just flick it on and off until I get the positioning right.
Yes, I recommend this product!

Outstanding product. I replaced my existing finder scope (came with OTA). The Orion finderscope, once installed with bracket for SCT, locks into place. I really like the spring tension knob. Only two screws to adjust and I am ready to go.

I ordered this finder at a pretty strange time for me - my LX200 telescope is down electronically at the moment, but should be getting repaired soon. Nevertheless, the day this finder arrived, I knew it would be a big improvement over the Meade finder. With a clear night to aim it up into the sky at M42 and Mars, I knew it was superior optically. After getting the focus fairly accurate (it arrived seemingly with the focus a good bit off the mark), the view of M42 and the Orion region just seemed so much better than the Meade finder. So much so, that it might just be more fun actually doing some wide field observing through it occasionally during a night of observing or CCD imaging. It seems that the Meade finder gives the impression of not cooperating for a decent focus adjustment, and I never thought the stars were sharp. With the Orion finder, even shaking all over the place, the impression was definite - sharp stars, finer detail, deep colors in Mars and Betelgeuse, etc. Once it is mounted on the LX200, WOW! The build quality on this little finder is superb, and the optical coatings are impressive. Especially noticeable were the green coatings on the eyepiece, another feature that sets this finder apart. I liked the double crosshair shape of the reticle a lot, especially since it is so easy to align it back to a vertical position if the scope is rotated in the bracket. I do think the illumination is a bit bright, making the reticle perhaps a bit distorted. Actually, it seems that the sharpness of the illuminated reticle could be a bit better, but this is just a minor concern. I did get the impression that a star or other object could easily be placed right in the center square of the reticle when the finder is mounted. So, I'm quite happy with this little telescope because, for real observing as opposed to just using it for alignment purposes, it represents very good optical quality for it's price range. We all take out finder scopes a bit for granted, using them only at the beginning of a session for a GoTo calibration. We then move on to CCD imaging, with a piggyback ED refractor as a second instrument. But, this Orion finder has all the little perks (reticle illumination, great optics, easy alignment) that for me will make a real difference in how I view a finder scope once I get back up operating.
