Astronomy Doesn’t Have to Be a Back-Aching Experience!

Take a load off while you observe at the telescope and your back will thank you. Stooping over to peer into a telescope eyepiece can take its toll on your back and neck and shorten your observing sessions. These adjustable-height stools are just what the doctor ordered. Each has a padded, adjustable-height vinyl seat and sturdy metal leg supports. Legs fold and seat detaches for easy storage.

#5935 Standard Observer’s Chair
Lightweight design has six seat height positions, from 19-3/4" to 25-1/4" above ground. Seat is 11-1/4" in diameter and has 2" of foam padding.

#5941 Weekend Observer’s Chair
Single-strut legs provide sturdy support. Seat is 13" in diameter with 2" of foam padding; continuously adjusts in height from 16" to 24" above ground. Legs fold and seat detaches from post for easy storage.

#5949 Heavy-Duty Observer’s Chair
Double-braced legs provide maximum support. Seat is 13.5" in diameter with 3" of foam padding; continuous height adjustment from 20" to 29" above ground. Legs fold and seat detaches from post for easy storage.

#5939 Deluxe Quick-Adjust Observer’s Chair
The most versatile seat for telescope users! Instantly set sliding padded seat to desired height — anywhere from 8" to 34" above ground — without loosening or tightening any bolts. Even provides some back support. Seat is 14-1/2" x 9-3/4" with 2" of foam padding. Folds flat for storage and transport.

This is a nicely padded drum throne, repurposed as an astronomy observers chair.
To use this chair you will need a separate drum key to reposition the seat, not supplied but available from your local drum supply store.
Although this chair can be used with a telescope to good effect - particularly (and fortunately for me) a mid-size SCT telescope with does not change height dramatically with target altitude.
But a better choice are the sliding seat astronomy chairs - of which there are several on the market (Orion should stock one). These have a back you can lean against, and change height as easily as breathing.
Pros: well padded
Cons: adjustment is a pain
No, I do not recommend this product.

This is a perfectly functional and comfortable observing chair, but there are some minor annoyances that make me feel that the asking price is a bit much. The chair's height can be adjusted by locking a few rubber compression points onto the central steel tube. I'm not a big guy by any means at about 130 lbs, but I find myself pushing the chair down through the tightened rubber rings with my weight fairly often. That said, the construction is very heavy duty and the chair is comfortable for a long night of observing. Now that I've paid for it, this is the chair I use.
Yes, I recommend this product!
