The Orion-designed Mini 50mm Guide Scope is a complete and compact guide scope solution designed for use with the Orion StarShoot AutoGuider (sold separately) or similar small-chip CCD autoguider devices. The Orion Mini 50mm Guide Scope is ideal for guiding long-exposure astrophotographs with imaging telescopes up to 1500mm in focal length.

Thanks to the high level of guiding accuracy offered by modern autoguider devices such as the Orion StarShoot AutoGuider, astro-imagers of today can use guide scopes with much shorter focal lengths and smaller apertures compared to the large, bulky models used in the past. Using a more optically "fast" refractor as a guide scope can save astro-imagers time, space, and money, but will still provide the unrivaled accuracy that only autoguiding can bring to long-exposure astrophotographs. Although modern dedicated autoguider devices allow small, optically fast guide scopes to be used with excellent results, there is an unfortunate scarcity of quality offerings available. That is, until now. The Orion Mini 50mm Guide Scope brings autoguiding into the realm of affordability for any astrophotographer, and brings the guide scope to a position that was previously occupied by a telescope finder scope.

Consisting of a 50mm aperture, 162mm focal length (f/3.2) achromatic refractor guide scope, an adjustable dovetail guide scope bracket, an 1.25" aluminum parfocal ring, a dovetail mounting base, and an adapter plate, the Orion Mini 50mm Guide Scope makes it easy for any astro-imager to enjoy the precision of autoguiding in their images. All this pint-sized setup requires is a StarShoot AutoGuider (sold separately) or similar small-chip CCD autoguider and it’s ready for night, camera, action! The guide scope bracket fits into the standard Orion dovetail finder scope base found on most Orion telescopes. If your imaging scope doesn’t feature a dovetail base or has one already occupied by an oft-used finder, the included dovetail base and attachment hardware lets you attach the Mini 50mm Guide Scope to any optical tube. Alternatively, the included adapter plate can be used to attach the dovetail base and Mini 50mm Guide Scope to any standard dovetail plate or side-by-side plate if preferred.

The featherweight guide scope tips the scales at a mere 16oz., and has been designed for use with imaging telescopes measuring up to 1500mm in focal length. This one-pound wonder Mini 50mm Guide Scope features fully multi-coated optics and a focus-adjusting front ring with locking collar. The included parfocal ring makes it easy to repeat autoguiding performance night to night, by letting you set the ideal focus position of the autoguider.

Find out how easy and affordable it can be to add autoguiding precision to your astrophotos today with the new Orion Mini 50mm Guide Scope!

First of all, Thank you to Orion for the donations for my astronomy clubs annual banquet. You were very generous. I won this little guidescope in the raffle. I mounted on my 10" SCT. I was doubtful at first as to how it would perform, I was pleasantly surprised! The guiding was perfect with my Starshoot AutoGuider. Great product highly recommend.

I purchsed the Awesome autoguider package a year ago. Which included a ST 80mm, Starshoot Autoguider, Tube rings and dovetail. (great product!!) I have that on my 8 inch reflector. I was fortunate enough to get a ST120 f5 for Christmas and needed this smaller guidescope for AP. This mini was the logical choice. So I purchsed it after christmas. It is uber easy to setup, focus and now I can move my SSAG from the ST80 and the ST120 without issue. You have to focus the mini like you do other finderscopes, but after you have the Parfocal ring loceked in place and adjusted, only minor adjustment are needed if any. This little autoguider is great. This Puppy guides like a champ!!!

I love this little finder scope! If you have a tripod with a guider port and you have a guide camera this little scope makes it all come together. The overall function and feel of the unit is high quality. Its function is ideally suited for the Orion Starshoot Autoguider and its weight makes it great for small to medium sized tripods. It comes will extra accessories that make its connection to the scope easy and its easy to adjust to get just the right view. Once you get this you'll never use your older viewfinder again. I have to say I was really surprised by the amount of light it was able to grab. I had not issues finding guide stars with it.

I bought this "guide scope" as part of the magnificent mini package. I had *HOPED* I could also use this scope as a finder scope by mating it with a suitable eyepiece. But that's not possible out of the box because there is not enough travel on the front element or the eyepiece mounting port. If the unit came with a 1.25 inch extension barrel that could screw into a 1.25" eyepiece it would be much more useful - especially when setting it up to align the guider with the scope or when just attempting to get a visual read on the star field.
Customer support says a diagonal would be needed to use it as a finder scope, but something tells me it wouldn't work that way either because the travel would then be TOO far to focus with any of the eyepieces I tried.
One problem I noted, however is that the 3-point ring/halo mounting isn't very secure. It lacks, e.g. rubberized bolts so you're pretty much guaranteed to scratch up the barrel of the finderscope. Also since there is only a single set of adjustment screws attempting to align the finderscope with the main-scope axis is almost impractical, and I fear there is likely to be flexure as well.
I'm hoping when I hook up the guider camera it will prove more useful than my initial experiences seem to indicate.
Cons: not useful as finderscope, insufficient adjustment
