Mfg Model #  PST

The Sun's got a lot going on, and the Meade Coronado Personal Solar Telescope will show you. By zeroing in on far end of the Sun's light spectrum - the hydrogen-alpha line at 656.3nm to be exact - the PST reveals a star rolling with violent, ever-changing activity. Best of all, the PST's innovative design allows H-alpha solar viewing for a breakthrough price.

With the PST you will witness sudden eruptions in the solar atmosphere called flares and the dramatic streamers known as prominences that shoot out from the Sun's edge. You'll see a solar disk mottled with granularity and dark, snaking filaments. Active regions containing migrating sunspots and bright, irregularly shaped plages add to the incredible detail. This compact 40mm f/10 refractor houses a special filter called an etalon, which transmits only the primary wavelength of light emitted by hydrogen (656.3nm) in the solar chromosphere, where the action is.A bandpass of less than 1.0 Angstorm allows the visibility of surface features and activity that get washed out in wider-bandpass "white light" solar filters. Internal blocking filters reject all unwanted and harmful radiation, for completely safe viewing.

The supplied 20mm (20x) Kellner telescope eyepiece (1.25") provides a full-disk view of the Sun through the permanent 90 degree diagonal prism. (Other 1.25mm eyepieces can be used for additional magnification options.) A focusing knob keeps the image sharp and a tuning collar allows the contrast to be adjusted on selected surface details. A clever Sun-finder window near the eyepiece provides a safe way to aim the telescope.

The telescope is just 15" long and weighs only 3 lbs., so it needs only a small telescope mount or a sturdy camera tripod for support. A 1/4" -20 mounting socket under the scope's rear housing provides the attachment point.

The PST will show you how dynamic our nearest star really is, with some surface phenomena changing from one minute to the next! Get a Meade Coronado Personal Solar telescope today and get in the action.

I recently purchased a Coronado PST from Orion. I must say, the sales staff was top notch. They were friendly, fast and professional and made me feel confident that I would be well taken care of, a rare deal these days. I ordered the scope on a Monday, and received my package on Wednesday. Now that is fast! The scope came in perfect condition. Collimation was spot on and it was exactly as advertised. I read a lot of reviews before purchasing and felt I made an informed decision. I'm always amazed at people who expect something for nothing and complain about a product after putting unreasonable expectations on it. The PST performs better than I expected. You are getting an H-Alpha view of the sun for 500 bucks. Stop complaining already. If you want Hubble views of the sun, prepare to spend a few thousand dollars. I for one feel that for the money, the PST is well worth it. And yes, I'm one of those gear geeks that will eventually spend the money to get the crazy closeup views, but for now, this little scope kicks butt. The portability factor is a big bonus too. Thank you Orion for the great service and great product. I will certainly be doing business with you in the future.

Very pleased with the PST. The views of the prominences and surface detail are very rewarding. The supplied 20mm eyepiece gives a nice view, but I like to use my 10 mm eyepiece to get a closer look. It's so portable that you'll find yourself taking it outside every clear day for a quick look to see how the sun has changed . It's so easy to aim with the built in finder. Saw my first sunspot yeaterday! Can't wait for an eclipse. There's an inner excitement about safely viewing our closest star! Could have spent more, but I'm very pleased with the performance of the PST .

My wife gave me the PST for Christmas (boy, was she surprised). It took awhile to get used to viewing through, it may be because of the pinhole at the base of the eyepiece mount. Once I got the hang of it, things moved smoothly. After a little experimentation, I have determined that with the equipment I have on hand, I get my best views using the Orion Stratus 8mm eyepiece with the #15 yellow filter. It's great. I can see prominences, sunspots and filaments. I can even see the orange peel effect on the surface. For years I have used this self- depreciating joke: How do you know when you've met a boring person? -- They describe astronomy as exciting. I haven't said "WOW" so many times since I got my first light-bucket back in 1984. The Sun gives a new show each day. Note to future buyers: The scope will fit into the Orion pluck foam case which is $50 cheaper than the custom case and it gives you more room for accessories. Note to Orion: I'd like to see you come out with solar contrast filter sets.
