Don't put a standard-issue diagonal into a high-quality refractor or Cassegrain telescope or you'll be losing 10% or more of the light collected by the telescope's optics. Use an Orion Enhanced diagonal instead. Their lab-tested enhanced aluminum coatings reflect 97% of the inbound light to your eyepiece, for brighter images compared to standard diagonals. Orion's beautifully machined and anodized aluminum housings feature machine-threaded baffles for high contrast and nonmarring compression ring collars for securing the eyepiece. Nosepiece barrels are threaded to accept filters. Endcaps included.

excellent diagonal

I replaced the old Celestron diagonal that came with my C5 telescope with this Orion diagonal. The view through the Orion diagonal is noticeably brighter and crisper, but the Celestron diagonal was old and a bit cruddy, so this isn't entirely a fair comparison. But I'm very happy with the Orion diagonal for three other reasons. You can screw a filter into the end of the diagonal that goes into the telescope, so you can switch eyepieces without needing to take the filter off one eyepiece and put it on the next eyepiece. The brass compression rings are easier to use and hold the eyepiece with better alignment than tiny set- screws. And the tubes are a little bit longer, so you can stack a couple of filters onto an eyepiece and it will still fit into the diagonal. Every time I use my telescope I'm glad I got this diagonal.

Very fine quality product to give the crisp view
of all the celestial objects within the resolution of
my 80mm refractor. I was not aware the image would
be reversed. That was a shock to see Pleiades
reoriented. That is my only disappointment. I wanted
the extra quality reflectivity if it only had the correct
image orientation.
Favorite object to observe:??M-42, M-45 and Double Cluster
Cons: lacks correct orientation

After using this diagonal for a couple of months, the compression ring started losing its spring, such that it became more difficult to get an eyepiece out of the diagonal. Finally, while on a special trip to a dark sky location, with perfect observing conditions, an eyepiece and filter got stuck in the diagonal, preventing me from switching eyepieces and rendering my telescope mostly useless for the rest of the weekend. I returned it to Orion, and Ric was very prompt and helpful in replacing the diagonal. The new one seems to work fine so far. But a couple of tips if you use this diagonal: MAKE SURE THE GAP IN THE COMPRESSION RING IS OPPOSITE TO THE THUMB SCREW. STORE THE DIAGONAL WITH THE THUMBSCREW LOOSENED, SO THE COMPRESSION RING WILL MAINTAIN ITS SPRINGINESS.

Outstanding Star Diagonal...

The 1.25" Orion Enhanced Star Diagonal is thus far the best upgrade I have installed on my Meade 8 Inch SCT. In fact it saved me a fairly large sum of money. I own a vintage Meade LX3 Model 2080 equiped with the Multi- Coated Silvered Optics Group or -MSOG- The scope came with a standard meade diagonal and even after a long collimation process I kept getting horrible images from my LX3. I feared the worst and was getting ready to ship the OTA back to Meade in order to have the optics replaced. As you can imagine NOT CHEAP by any means considering that this paticular SCT was built in 1983. A friend suggested replacing the diagonal with a good quaility star diagonal and highly recommended this paticular diagonal from Orion. Problem solved! The views with this old girl are beautiful! Simply amazing for how old this scope is. Thank you Orion for offering such a good quaility star diagonal and a great price. This diagonal saved me a large sum of money. More over, my Meade LX3 Model 2080 can stay a classic with it's original optics! Thanks again! Michael
